Waynesburg's market returns Local farmers and others once again will peddle a variety of treats at the weekly Farmers Market, which starts May 14 at the First Baptist Church parking lot on West High Street in Waynesburg. The market, which is in its fourth year, has become somewhat of a summertime tradition in Waynesburg. The Farmers Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday from May 14 to Oct. 15. The market, which was spearheaded by Waynesburg Prosperous and Beautiful, is an event we urge Greene County residents to support. We can think of no better place to experience locally grown agriculture. Selection of items will vary, depending on the time of the year. Items that will be available on opening day include a variety of vegetable plants and flowers, hydroponic tomatoes, pork, beef, eggs, baked goods and hot dogs. Later in the summer, more locally grown produce and other items will be sold. The Farmers Market will host several special events during the summer. The first event, "Gardening in Greene," will be held May 28 and will feature a variety of plants for sale, as well as an information booth so that gardeners can learn tips on how to keep their plants healthy. Other special days include Kids' Day on June 25, SummerFest on July 30, Senior Day on Aug. 27 and FallFest on Sept. 24.
Greene County's festivals and pageants are usually one-day events, except for the King Coal Show that goes on for a week. The Farmers Market is a five-month open-air market, and its success is often dependent on unpredictable weather conditions. For the last three years, people have supported the market, and we urge continued support for the work farmers, nonprofit organizations and churches put into this enterprise.
It's the least Greene County can do.
