High school softball

Mapletown won two Section 2-A games, upsetting West Greene, 4-3, and beating Geibel 12-2 in six innings.

Against West Greene, Christa Grim, who went 3-for-4, singled in the winning run in the top of the sixth inning. Grim also had an RBI-double. Wendy Dickerson had two hits for Mapletown (9-5, 9-7). Kaitlyn Novak was the winning pitcher.

Sarah Burns had two hits and two RBI, losing pitcher Rachel Burns went 3-for-4 and Chelsey Jones had two doubles for the Pioneers (11-3, 15-4), who committed six errors.

Against Geibel, Heather Shook went 4-for-5 with a double, triple and four runs scored. Grim was 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBI. Winning pitcher Miranda Shipley allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter.

• Carmichaels swept a doubleheader from visiting Frazier, 11-1 and 19-4. The sweep, combined with Mapletown's win over West Greene, clinches the Section 2-A championship for Carmichaels.



The Mikes' Kasey Osborne was the winning pitcher in both games for the Mikes (13-1, 13-2), tossing a three-hitter and six-hitter. Shayleigh Busti doubled in the opener and tripled in the nightcap. Jade McCann and Ashley Cherniski also tripled in the second game for the Mikes. Taylor Nichols and Lacey Ludrosky doubled on the day.

• Kelsey Cunningham hit a three-run home run to help Peters Township clinch a playoff berth in Section 4-AAAA with an 8-4 victory over Canon-McMillan.

Paige Burris doubled and Amanda Heitmeier and Jody Kohne each had a triple for the Indians (8-4, 14-4). Erica Taylor, and Katrina Gallagher each had a double for the Big Macs (2-9, 2-11).

• Tabitha Leach singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Ringgold a 4-3 victory over McGuffey.

Emily Stefan struck out five for the win and Allison Kleinhans nine in the loss. Ringgold is 5-13, 5-9 in the section. McGuffey fell to 3-10, including 2-10 in the section.

High school baseball

Phil Staab cracked a two-run double with two out in the top of the seventh inning to push Canon-McMillan past Bethel Park, 6-5, and clinch the Section 3-AAAA title.

Chris Dittmar and Aaron Wiegel each had a double for C-M (11-3, 16-3). Jim Meyer tripled for Bethel Park (8-6, 10-8).

• Mike Bodnar had two hits and drove in three runs as Beth-Center upended Charleroi, 6-3, in Section 2-AA. The Bullodgs (7-4, 9-3) scored three times in the top of the seventh.

Matt Stotka and Matt Bodnar each had a double for B-C. Simeon Bell doubled for Charleroi (9-3, 10-4).

• Bentworth scored twice in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 victory over Geibel in Section 1-A. Taylor Young allowed six hits and two runs for Bentworth. Dalton Bercosky doubled.

• Zach Patterson's RBI-double with two out in the top of the seventh inning gave Brownsville a 3-2 victory over Burgettstown in Section 2-AA. Mike Michalsky, Greg Novak, and P.J. Lanci each had a double for Brownsville (8-3, 11-4). Harry Landman added a triple.

Brendon Bongiorni had an RBI-single for Burgettstown (4-7, 7-7).

• Ben Carson doubled, hit two singles and drove in four runs to lead California to a 17-1, five-inning victory over West Greene in Section 1-A.

Brandon Rossi and Tom Sparrow had two doubles for the Trojans (6-6, 8-7-1). Gary Anderson doubled for WG (0-14, 2-15).

• Jake Cramer and Ethan Cieply each hit a double to power Belle Vernon to a 9-2 victory over McGuffey in Section 4-AAA. Luke Baker had a two-run home run for McGuffey (2-10, 3-10).

• Ringgold scored seven runs on only four hits and overcame seven errors to take a 7-1 victory from Elizabeth Forward in Section 4-AAA.

Drew Guarino had a triple and two RBI for the Rams. Corey Young struck out 11.

• Upper St. Clair had eight extra-base hits and rolled to a 15-6 victory over host Peters Township in Section 3-AAAA, snapping the Indians' six-game winning streak.

Brian Lattanzi led the way for USC (7-7, 12-7) with a home runs and a double. Peters Township (8-6, 13-6) received a home run from Jordan Jankowski and doubles from Pete Ross and Austin Hancock. The Indians must defeat section champion Canon-McMillan on the road Wednesday to be assured of a spot in the WPIAL playoffs.

• Carmichaels jumped on Jefferson-Morgan with a six-run first inning and beat the Rockets, 10-0 in five innings, in Section 1-A.

Winning pitcher Joby Lapkowicz struck out 10 and also doubled and drove in two runs. Billy Musgrove had two RBI and Chuck Gasti went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Mikes (13-0, 16-1).

The Rockets (8-4, 12-4) are tied with Geibel for second place, but just a half-game ahead of Bentworth.

• Chartiers-Houston led just 2-0 after four innings then scored 15 runs over the final three and defeated Clairton, 17-4, in Section 2-A.

Andy Petras struck out 10 in a complete game victory. Jason Paris, Sage Grego and Tanner Gump each doubled and drove in three runs for the Bucs (14-0, 15-2).

• Jimmy Bracken's double in the sixth inning scored Ethan Fernbaugh and Avella defeated Cornell, 2-1, in Section 2-A.

Chris Khouri scattered four hits and struck out eight to get the win. Mason Adams had two hits for the Eagles (10-4, 11-6).

• Mike Neckerman and Jonathan Lutz combined on a six-hitter and West Mifflin took advantage of six Trinity errors to defeat the visiting Hillers 2-0 and clinch the Section 4-AAA title.

West Mifflin (13-0, 16-2) made the most of only three hits. The Titans scored without the benefit of a hit in the second inning and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Trinity pitcher Tyler Schrader struck out six.

Trinity (9-3, 11-6) had the only extra-base hits in the game, a double by Graham Cowieson and a Joey Havrilak triple, but each came with two outs.

• Fort Cherry's Nick Russell had a huge game at the plate, hitting three of the Rangers' five home runs but they weren't enough to produce a win. Visiting Waynesburg used a nine-run fifth inning to defeat the Rangers, 15-10, in Section 2-AA.

Each of Russell's home runs - in the first, second and seventh innings - were solo shots. Brent Liggett had a two-run homer in a six-run first inning and Josh Snatchko hit a two-run blast in the fourth.

Adam Coldren hit two doubles for Waynesburg.

Pony baseball

Eric Richards threw a six-hitter with seven strikeouts as Elks defeated Chambers Insurance, 4-2, in a Washington Pony game.

Cory Humphreys and Jacob Osko each went 2-for-2 for Elks (3-3).

Dustin Gallentine doubled for Chambers Insurance.

• Winning pitcher Alex Holsopple triple and drove in two run to lead C-H VFW 191 to an 8-2 victory over Fort Cherry No. 1 in Greater Route 50 Pony action.

Holsopple and Dylan Pounds combined for 12 strikeouts for VFW 191 (3-1). Pounds also doubled and drove in two runs. Tanner Garry struck out 12 for Fort Cherry (1-2).

W&J No. 2 in ECAC

The Washington & Jefferson College softball team will host the four-team ECAC Southern Division III tournament Saturday and Sunday at Brooks Park.

The Presidents (26-11), seeded No. 2, will host because top-seeded Misericordia (32-12) is unable to host.Third-seeded Alvernia (31-11) will play fifth-seeded Lake Erie (21-18) in the first round Wednesday while sixth-seeded Swarthmore (21-18) plays fourth-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy (22-15).

Misericordia plays the lowest remaining seed at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Presidents play the remaining team at noon.
