Italian society to cite community leaders

The Italian-American Cultural & Heritage Society of Washington County will present its 2008 Outstanding Citizen Awards to Judge John DiSalle and Charles A. Tatano, owner of Tatano Wire & Steel, at the society's annual banquet.

The banquet will be held May 18 at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe, and guest speaker will be Dave Wannstedt, head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh.

DiSalle is a 1977 graduate of Peters Township High School and a 1981 graduate of Duquesne University, where his uncle, the late Father Francis X. Malinowski, was a Holy Ghost Father and professor of theology.

He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1984, and after 21 years as a practicing attorney, DiSalle was elected to the Court of Common Pleas of Washington County.

In 2000, DiSalle was honored by the South Hills Quad Chamber of Commerce with the annual Citizen of the Year Award in recognition of his community service and volunteerism. He is on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, the Washington Symphony Orchestra, the Canonsburg Renaissance Group and the Washington Jazz Society.

Tatano is a 1951 graduate of Cecil High School and started work at Forbes Steel Corp., Canonsburg, immediately upon graduation. He was drafted into the Army in May 1953 and served in Korea in 1953 and 1954 as part of the 2nd Infantry Division.

Tatano started his first plastics factory in his garage in 1969 before relocating it to Midland. He expanded again in 1978 in Houston, and he retired from Forbes Steel in 1981 to pursue the plastics business full time.

In 1991, he purchased the existing Forbes Steel property, where he worked 40 years earlier, and formed Tatano Wire & Steel. From 1970 until 1980, Charles owned the Longhorn Saloon in Muse and became known as the mayor of Muse.
