Scholarship winner

Sarah Walko of Waynesburg Central High School was named the winner Thursday of a $1,500 scholarship presented by the Waynesburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

This is the 18th year the chamber has presented a scholarship to a Greene County senior who plans to attend a college, university or trade school.

Walko, a daughter of Joseph and Patricia Walko of Waynesburg, plans to attend Lee University to pursue a degree in intercultural studies this fall.

The scholarship is awarded based on grade-point average and a 500-word essay on "How they plan to use their education to make a difference in your life and your community."

This year, 44 applications were received by the chamber. The committee had a difficult task of selecting one winner from the qualified field.

The scholarship will be presented at the chamber's quarterly membership luncheon at noon May 28. The luncheon will be held at First Baptist Church and is open to the public. Reservations are required and may be made by calling the chamber office at 724-627-5926. The cost of the luncheon is $10.
