County OKs drug discount cards
jstevens@observer-reporter.com
WAYNESBURG - Greene County will participate in a prescription drug discount program that will help some residents save money on their medications.
Commissioners agreed at their meeting Thursday to participate in the Caremark program through the National Association of Counties, which offers an average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs. The program is free to both the county and to any participants. Everyone is eligible to participate.

Greene County pharmacies participating in the program include: Cornerstone Care in Greensboro; CVS, Giant Eagle, McCracken's, Med-Fast and Rite Aid in Waynesburg; Gabler's Drug and Medicine Mine in Carmichaels; and Giant Eagle in Rices Landing.
"This is a really good program, especially for people without prescription drug coverage," said Commissioner Pam Snyder.
More than 57,000 pharmacies nationwide accept the card, including most chain pharmacies and many independents. The cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income or existing health coverage. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use.
Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance. The cardholder pays the negotiated discount price or the pharmacy's retail price, whichever is lower.
Additional benefits include a safety feature that alerts pharmacists when one drug may conflict with another medication the cardholder is taking, if the prescriptions were obtained with the NACo discount card.

The board also approved a grant application for funding from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency Hazardous Material Response Fund. The county plans to use the money to purchase hydrocarbon sponge substances to clean spills of hazardous fluids on the highways, Marshall said.
Trucking companies responsible for the spills typically have to pay for all cleanup costs.
Commissioners also approved spending $5,000 for a survey at Meadow Ridge Business Park.
