SHASDA honors Canon-Mac senior
Vermilya, son of Kathy and Chris Vermilya of Canonsburg, has a profound hearing loss and uses a cochlear implant.
SHASDA is the South Hills Area School Districts Association, a consortium of 22 school districts interacting to improve public education in the South Hills. The award is given to two students in each of the participating districts who have demonstrated significant improvement in student performance and/or have overcome obstacles in attaining their present status.
Vermilya also received an award from the Clarke Mainstream Center, a division of the Clarke School for the Deaf for Oral Education in Northampton, Mass. The Mainstream Center presented him with the fifth annual Kid with Character Award for his outstanding qualities as a mainstreamed student.
