California school janitor to stand trial over death threat

A suspended janitor will stand trial on accusations he threatened to kill everyone at his school if he ever lost his job.

District Judge Curt Thompson ruled Monday there is sufficient evidence to order a trial in Washington County Court for Michael Tiernan, 53, of Daisytown, on charges of making terroristic threats and harassment.

The ruling followed testimony at his preliminary hearing from a coworker, Thyra Blackson, who said he made the threat during a candid conversation about the economy while the two were cleaning at the California Middle and High schools. Tiernan was arrested May 14 by California Borough police.

I think that saying that in a candid conversation with someone, doesnt' literally mean that you are going to do something like that! My nephew is a perfect example of how things get out of hand and things said get carried away. Someone was picking on him in a lunchroom and he ended up getting suspended...but not before he blurted out when I get back I'm gonna kill you...and OF COURSE HE meant nothing by that....it is just "talk" when your upset or angry! And he ended up getting freaking arrested and put in jail and kick out of school...and that's just crap! They ruined this boys life for NOTHING..over a few harsh words to someone who was picking on him first!!! Its ridiculous that things exactly like this get carried away! Im sure that he meant NOTHING by the words he said, just as my nephew meant nothing by the words that ended up costing him a messed up future...and for what??? I thought this was America and we had freedom of speech!!! It seems as though if it was up to others, we'd NOT have that!! I think this woman was ridicuous to make an accusation based on a conversation with this man.....I hope she can sleep at night after she ruins this mans life!!!!

Disgusted with America!!

I am pleased to see that Judge Thompson was strong. I'm sure parents in the district or others working in the schools can may rest a bit knowing that this perpatrator has been put on NOTICE that this will not be tolerated. If the system works, part of his sentence should be spent at a crisis center, so he can see the true impact people like him have. But they may not want him, when he gets out of jail. When your kids go to school you trust that the people who are hired are worthy to be around kids. As for the sexual harrassment, I believe that speaks for itself. Give me a break this is 2009 and that behavior is just not tolerated. Union or no union. I can't think of a company that would say, hey what a good guy lets keep him around, he would be fun at the company picnic. To those people who think its ok to talk to women or men for that matter that way, need to say to themselves, what about my daughter, mother or wife. All these women did was go to work, and for months had to endure foul gestures. I would like to see some type of jail time, even with our overburdened system a message needs to be sent. The accussed Michael Tiernan is 53 years old, far from a teenager. This is someone with some serious issues and they need to be addressed before a tragedy. If Mr. Tiernan has a Mrs. Tiernan in his life I bet he is not the only one in the seeking legal counsel.

THIS IS JUST A OUTRAGE THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN HAVE A CONVERSATION AT WORK WITHOUT SOMEONE TWISTING THE STORY TO MAKE THEMSELVES LOOK GOOD. PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULDN'T THROW STONES!! BECAUSE IN THE END IT WILL COME BACK TO GET YOU!!!

Freedom of speech does not and should never include a threat to kill people. This was not a statement that should not be dealt with lightly. How can someone honestly believe that when a threat is made by a 53 year old man to kill everyone in a building,it should just be chalked up to freedom of speech??

Concerned

I give credit to the women who turned this man in,and she should be able to sleep very well. She may have saved the lives of hundreds of people,2 of them being my Grandchildren. To say that she shouldn't be able to sleep, because she made the right decision is asinine.I for one would like to thank her for having the guts to come forward!!!

Disgusted with uncaring people!!
