High school baseball

Zack Jeney came within two outs of pitching a no-hitter as he helped California clinch at least a share of the Section 1-A championship with a 5-0 win over Geibel.

Jeney, who tripled in the game, gave up a single with one out in the seventh inning. Ben Carson had a two-run double while Matt Hartman and Zac Edminston also doubled for the Trojans (11-2, 17-2).

Nolan Zavora took the loss for Geibel (7-6, 8-9).

• Joe Tarley's two-run single fueled Beth-Center's four-run fifth inning and led to a 5-3 victory at Washington in a Section 2-AA game.

Matt Stotka had two hits, including a double, Ryan Butka doubled and John Lowden went 2-for-2 while Todd Chisler struck out seven in the complete-game effort for the Bulldogs (4-7, 5-10).

Alex Evans, Shaun Pierson, Eric Poland and Joe Ward each had two hits for Wash High (6-5, 6-8), which changed pitchers five times after Brad Poland threw four scoreless innings.

• Scott Throckmorton's double to the right-field fence was retrieved by Burgettstown's Sean Tunno, who fired to shortstop Bryan Vallina, who then threw home to Tyler Lonchar in time to catch a Waynesburg runner for the final out of a 6-5 Section 2-AA win for the Blue Devils.

Pitcher Nick Donati, who struck out eight over seven innings, had a double, single and two RBI, and Vallina doubled for Burgettstown (5-6, 7-8).

Mitchell Monas hit two home runs and had three RBI for the Raiders (7-4, 7-7). Throckmorton had two doubles.

• Brownsville scored 13 runs in the first two innings en route to an 18-5 win at Charleroi that clinched the Section 2-AA title.

Randy Smithberger hit a three-run homer for the Falcons (10-1, 11-5).

Mike Carcella had two hits, including a double, for Charleroi (3-9, 4-11).

• Thomas Jefferson scored at least a run in each inning and defeated McGuffey 12-0 in Section 4-AAA play.

The Jaguars (10-3, 13-5) scored a run in each of the first three innings before tallying three in the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the sixth. McGuffey had only four hits in the game.

Scott Graham doubled for McGuffey (2-11, 2-13) and Jordan Baker was the losing pitcher.

• Joby Lapkowicz homered twice to lead a 17-hit barrage by Carmichaels in a 20-3 Section 1-A win over West Greene.

Ethan Virgilli and Logan Phillips added triples, while Tim Voihofer and Cody Andrews doubled for the Mikes (9-4, 10-6), who stayed in control of their own playoff destiny with the victory.

Billy Musgrave pitched five strong innings to get the victory, despite giving up a three-run homer to West Greene's Buck Rabor.

High school softball

Katelynn Falleroni hit a two-run homer in sixth inning to lead Trinity to a 5-0 win over Canon-McMillan in a Section 4-AAAA game. With the win, the Hillers tied Baldwin for the section title.

Caitlin Morris, Ashley Morran and Chelsea Lang all had RBI-singles during the sixth inning, when Trinity (10-2, 15-2) scored all five runs. Trinity pitcher Kristen Zelenka struck out 13 batters, walked one and held the Big Macs (2-10, 4-13) to just one hit.

• Emily Bosworth and Alyson Johnson produced run-scoring singles that provided Waynesburg with a 2-0 win at McGuffey in Section 4-AAA.

Courtney Orndoff tripled for the Raiders (10-5, 13-5). Lauren Minor pitched six innings for the win and Bosworth entered in the seventh and earned the save.

Allison Kleinhans went 3-for-4 with a double for McGuffey (4-11, 4-11).

• Shelley Talpas went 4-for-4 and scored three runs to lead Ringgold to a 9-1 victory over visiting West Mifflin in Section 4-AAA.

Amber Crompton struck out seven in the win for the Rams (5-10, 5-11).

Tara Simm suffered the loss for West Mifflin (1-14, 1-14).

• Washington scored 18 runs in the first inning during a 19-0, three-inning victory at winless Charleroi in a Section 2-AA game.

Jenna Phillips hit a three-run homer and finished with seven RBI while Alexis Lopez and Meghan Warner each tripled for the Prexies (14-1, 18-2). Amber Pivik, who had four hits, Jordan Jackson, Ashton Molinaro and Hanah Cohen all doubled for Wash High.

Pitcher Amanda Baughman struck out eight of the nine batters she faced and didn't allow a hit.

• Melissa Rankin went 2-for-4 with a home run, triple and four RBI to lead Bentworth past Fort Cherry, 11-1, in Section 1-A.

Pitcher Alyssa Zrimsek struck out nine, allowed no walks and scattered four hits over seven innings while Megan Sames was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI for the Bearcats (12-3, 15-3).

Brittany Kurowski and Brynne Bashioum each doubled for Bentworth, which finished second in the section.

Kaitlin Hoop, who doubled for playoff-bound Fort Cherry (8-7, 10-8), struck out seven and didn't walk a batter, but took the loss.

• Lacey Ludrosky and Taylor Nichols each went 3-for-3 as Carmichaels racked up 14 hits in a 5-3 win over Mapletown in Section 2-A.

Courtney Newland was the winning pitcher for Carmichaels (13-2, 14-2), the section champions. She struck out seven and walked one. Miranda Shipley struck out one in the loss for Mapletown (5-9, 7-9).

Heather Shook doubled for Mapletown while Memry Jordan and Beth May triples in the victory.

• Alison Clark had three hits while Sarah Veltre added a pair for West Greene in a 6-3 win over Jefferson-Morgan in Section 2-A.

Rachel Burns struck out seven and did not walk anybody to pick up the win for West Greene (11-4, 12-5), the second-place team in the section.

Emily Cottle struck out six but was saddled with the loss for Jefferson-Morgan (8-6, 9-7), who qualify for the playoffs as the third-place team. Heather Herbert had two hits including a double.

• Chartiers-Houston scored eight runs in the third inning and cruised to an 11-1 victory over Avella in Section 1-A.

Michelle Greenawalt struck out 10 and walked two in the win for the Bucs (15-0, 18-0). She also doubled along with Brittany Lyle, who had two hits on the day.

Meghan Brownlee tripled for Avella (3-12, 3-12). Bethany Kern was the losing pitcher.

Pony baseball

Jake Nicolella's home run helped Fairmont Supply defeat Chunko Law, 8-4, in a Washington Pony game.

Nicolella had three RBI, and Kyle Hackney tripled and Josh Langely had two doubles for Fairmont (2-3). Sam Interval earned the win.

Tyler Roy doubled for Chunko Law (3-3).

Girls lacrosse

Paige McMenamin scored three goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift Peters Township to an 11-10 win over Section 3-AAAA rival Mt. Lebanon.

Jenn Doran scored four times, Alyssa Izzi added two goals, Kelly McGrail and Morgan Murray each scored once and goalie Alexa Walnoha made eight saves for the Indians (16-1).

College golf

California's Matt Lodovico shot a six-over par 77 for the second straight day at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf East Regional Tournament at Speidel Jones Course in Wheeling, W.Va. Lodovico is in a tie for 22nd place in the 45-player field.

College baseball

Frostburg State built a 9-0 lead behind a seven-run fifth inning and held on to defeat 26th-ranked Washington & Jefferson, 9-4, at Ross Memorial Park.

Frostburg (28-13) brought 11 batters to the plate during the fifth and all seven runs came after two outs.

The Presidents (28-10), who scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings, were led by Chartiers-Houston graduate Justin Benson, Shaun Pfeil and Michael Kennedy, who each collected two hits and one RBI.

Dan Vietmeier (8-1) suffered the first loss of his career after allowing two runs on five hits in three innings.
