The Fayette County motorcyclist accused of leading state police on a high-speed chase through two counties last month faces a preliminary hearing on numerous charges later this month.

William Minerd, 27, of McClellandtown, and his passenger, Elizabeth Ann Mason, 25, of Point Marion, were injured May 22 after he crashed his motorcycle into a state police cruiser on Interstate 79 near the Racetrack Road exit.

The 16-mile pursuit began near the Carnegie interchange when a trooper attempted to stop the motorcycle, which had been clocked going 105 mph.

Three state police cruisers from the Pittsburgh barracks followed the motorcyclist south into Washington County until other police cars attempted a rolling roadblock ahead of the motorcycle to slow it down near the Racetrack Road exit.

The driver instead turned around on the interstate and began driving in the wrong direction. Minerd missed the first cruiser but crashed into a second police car.

Both Minerd and Mason were flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment. State police said Minerd suffered a broken leg while Mason has serious leg injuries.

Minerd is charged with five counts of reckless endangerment, three counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, including one count of DUI causing serious injury, two counts each of aggravated assault and simple assault and one count each of fleeing and eluding police, speeding, racing and reckless driving and 44 summary violations.

A preliminary hearing is set for June 22 at the district judge office in Collier Township.

Another example on those who ride motorcycles. Just because it is a small vehicle they think they can get away withdoing STUPID stuff. they have no regard for others. I am thankful that no others were hurt or died in this incident. The book should be thrown at the driver, what a dope!!!!!!!!!!

"ANOTHER EXAMPLE" Don't judge a book by its cover. Just because 1 person on a motorcyle acted in a "STUPID" manner does not mean that all who ride do. What about all the drivers that have "no respect" for motorcycles? I too am thankful that nobody was seriously hurt. And anyone who acts in that manner should pay for their actions!!!

Not all people who ride motocycles are stupid or ride carelessly. We have rode all over the county, thousands of miles without incident except for cars pulling out infront of us without looking. They do that on a normal day. So don't judge all motorcyclist by a few idiots. I am thankful that no one else was hurt and that they were not seriously injured. You just here more publicly about motorcycle accidents than any others.
