Rather than speed off to Cancun or Daytona when spring break rolled around in March, Burgettstown residents Spencer Bartoletti and Dessa Zuccaro made their way to Nashville, Tenn.

The trip ended up being about more than fun in the sun or seeing the sights. The duo auditioned for the CMT reality series, “Can You Duet,” and ended up being among the 10 top finalists out of hundreds of entrants.

“It was great at every point when we made it a step further,” Bartoletti said. “Dessa and I were pretty shocked, but we were really excited. Everyone was really good. It was a steep competition.”

“Can You Duet” airs Saturdays at 8 p.m. on CMT, with repeat airings throughout the week. The premiere episode aired last weekend, with a look inside the audition process. The competition gets down to the nitty-gritty this Saturday, with five of the 10 duos performing, and two getting the ax.

The judges on the program this year are singers Naomi Judd and Big Kenny, along with Scott Borchetta, the president and CEO of Big Machine Records. The winner will get a deal with the label.

It was intimidating in some ways – Bartoletti admitted that her knees were shaking during the auditions – but it was “good to be in the presence of people who have been in the industry and can tell you what you need to do to improve.”

The competition includes duos from Australia, Canada and various parts of the United States. Last year’s winners, Caitlin Lynn and William Snyder released their debut single in April.

Bartoletti and Zuccaro already know the outcome of the contest, but aren’t allowed to talk about it. The twosome call themselves Harmon Creek, after the road Zuccaro lives on in Burgettstown, and they’re both 2005 graduates of Burgettstown High School.

They didn’t know each other well in high school, until they were both cast in a production of the musical “Once Upon This Island.” From there, they discovered a shared passion for music, with influences that include Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and the Beatles. Zuccaro’s parents also are members of the Zuke Band, which plays country and Southern rock at bars and clubs throughout the region.

“I remember my aunt would baby-sit us for us on Saturday nights because my Mom and Dad were out playing,” Zuccaro explained. “I always enjoyed (music), but I never thought about pursuing a career in it until I met Spencer.”

Bartoletti is a student at Point Park University, where she’s a student in the radio and television broadcasting program, and Zuccaro works at a salon in Burgettstown. When they formed Harmon Creek, two years after they graduated from high school, “We were just doing it for fun at first,” Bartoletti explained.

Some of the venues they’ve played at in this region include Mario’s on the South Side, Saddle Ridge at Station Square and Generations Pub in Wheeling, W.Va. Meanwhile, Bartoletti admits it was interesting to see themselves on TV.

“It was good to watch ourselves after we did all that stuff and see how they put it all together.”
