PUC sets meeting on power lines

This article has been read 617 times.

A state Public Utility Commission official will explain the PUC's role in considering approval of electric transmission lines and public participation in that process at a public meeting Tuesday in Rogersville.

The meeting, arranged by the Greene County Planning Commission, with the assistance of state Sen. J. Barry Stout, D-Bentleyville, will be held at 6 p.m. in the Center Township Fire Hall.

The meeting was scheduled after the county planning commission received numerous inquiries from residents regarding a request by Cumberland Coal Resources LP for additional electric capacity to serve the planned expansion of mining operations in Center and Franklin townships.

While no application has been filed to date with the PUC, it is anticipated that Allegheny Power will submit a proposal to construct a 138 kilovolt power line, to be known as the Pursley Ridge Project, in the near future.

After receiving inquires about the project, the planning commission contacted Stout, who was able to arrange for a representative from the PUC to come to Greene County to meet with residents.

The PUC representative attending Tuesday's meeting will be unable to address specific questions regarding the Pursley Ridge project because an application has not yet been filed with the commission.

The representative will, however, discuss the role of the PUC in considering approval of a transmission line and the opportunities the public will have for participating in that process.

The planning commission urges all interested residents to attend this informational meeting to better understand the process that will occur. Questions may be directed to Chris Hardie, county planner, at 724-852-5300 or via e-mail at chardie@co.greene.pa.us.
