County fair is calling all cooks

This article has been read 1260 times.

Cooks, get into those kitchens and fine-tune your entries for the food competitions at this year's Washington County Fair, which runs Aug. 15-22.

In addition to the traditional apple pie and Hershey Cocoa contests, a shout-out is being given for entries for the Make it with Malt-O-Meal and Great American SPAM Championship recipe competitions.

From main dishes to snacks and desserts, all kinds of recipes are eligible for the Malt-O-Meal contest. Any variety of Malt-O-Meal cold cereal can be incorporated into your recipe.

Judges focus on taste, creativity and recipe convenience. This year's winners will receive $100 for first place and $50 for second. A third-place award will earn $25 worth of free cereal.

The SPAM contest includes two categories for both adults and youths. A set of prizes will be awarded for the top three main dish recipes in each category.

Entries are judged on taste, ease of preparation and presentation.

Two grand-prize winners will be selected from all first-place winners at the 40 host fairs being held across the United States. One National Grand SPAM Champion in the adult category will win a trip for two to the 2010 Waikiki SPAM JAM Festival - a prize valued at more than $3,000. One National SPAM Kid Chef of the Year will be awarded a $2,000 cash prize. National winning recipes will be selected by Hormel Foods Test Kitchens in early 2010.

In July, DQ will introduce its Peanut Butter Patties Blizzard of the Month. The Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard will be featured in August. Last summer, Dairy Queen served more than 10 million Thin Mint Blizzards, making it the most popular limited-time Blizzard flavor ever.
