Recycling event set for July 18

The Allegheny County Health Department and the Pennsylvania Resources Council are sponsoring a drop-off collection event for electronic waste and other hard-to-recycle items July 18.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Steel City Harley Davidson, 1375 Washington Road (Route 19 and Racetrack Road), Washington.

The following items will be accepted for a nominal fee:

Tire with no rim, $2; TV 19 inches and under, $10; TV 20 to 29 inches, $20; TV 30 to 39 inches, $25; TV 40 inches or greater or console TV, $35; CPU, laptop or server, $5; monitor, $10; combination personal computer/monitor /keyboard, $15; printer/scanner/fax/small ups, $5; VHS/DVD/phone/router, $2.

Current rating:
No fees will be charged for cell phones, ink and toner cartridges, compact fluorescent light bulbs, alkaline batteries, crutches, canes and walkers.

Health officials assure that the electronic waste will be refurbished or recycled in a way that protects public health and the environment from exposure to toxic chemicals.

While I do appreciate what you're doing here, don't you think that $35 is a bit steep to get rid of grandpa's old console tv that's been sittin' there since Eisenhower was president? No wonder some people toss stuff like this over a hill or leave it along some remote country lane. Those of us on fixed income can't afford to clean house. Since we won't be getting a cost of living raise but we did get the property tax raise and all the other tax increases, I guess we'll just leave it for our survivors to worry about, huh? Thank you for your efforts, though. At least you're trying.

Why if this is for recycling and helping the public heath and our environment would you CHARGE people that are trying to do just that?
