CANONSBURG - Walking down the sidewalks of Canonsburg will be a test of agility on Saturday. The roped-together lawn chairs are there, and the parade spirit is definitely in the air.

It was only a matter of time before someone with an entrepreneurial spirit noticed the merchandising potential for the borough's famed Independence Day parade.

That savvy individual is Don Burnside, 48, who owns Big D's House of T's. Burnside has a sign outside his West Pike Street shop advertising the "official" T-shirts of the Canonsburg parade.

The lawn chair used by tens of thousands of Canonsburg Fourth of July paradegoers has finally achieved trademark status, with the official lawn chair logo on the front of Burnside's shirts.

"That's always been the running joke," Burnside said of Canonsburg's general attitude toward the famed lawn chair.

This is the first year Burnside has printed parade T-shirts. They have sold well for the past few weeks, he said.

But Burnside plans to make his big sales at the parade. Onlookers might spot Burnside zipping around the parade route on his golf cart selling shirts that read, "I survived Canonsburg 'Guntown' July Fourth Celebration".

"People get there at 6 in the morning with their chairs," Burnside said when asked why he worded the shirts to include the word "survive." "It's a long gig."
