Community center making strides
A community center for Chartiers Township that has been a dream of township officials for nearly a decade is inching toward reality.
At 6 p.m. Tuesday, the board of supervisors and parks and recreation board will meet with Hays Design to look at the final design of the center proposed to be built at the 31-acre Arnold Park off Pike Street.

The 10,800-square-foot building would include space for a senior citizen center.
"Right now, senior citizens meet at the township building twice a week," Stockton said. "There would be a room in the center dedicated for their use."
There are also two multi-use rooms in addition to a banquet hall that can seat 300 people and a kitchen.
Stockton said the rooms would be available for rent.
The township received local approval for $500,000 in slots money and is awaiting final approval from the state Department of Community and Economic Development. Stockton also plans to seek an DCED grant.
"If the slots money is approved, we have about $1.2 million toward the project," Stockton said. "The tentative price right now is $2.4 million."
The township also plans to seek private donations for the project.
"We haven't used any taxpayer money to this point," Stockton said.
There is no target date for groundbreaking on the center. Other enhancements for the park include walking trails along with bocci ball or shuffleboard. Stockton will seek a grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
