Police: Man tried to set wife afire
Marco Isaac Corona-Mesa, 21, of 693 Ridge Ave., was taken into custody by township police several hours after dumping gas on Tanya Silcott.
Township police Sgt. Ron Raymond said the midnight shift received a 911 call about 6:35 a.m. to the residence from a cellular telephone. The 911 dispatcher could not get a response from the caller, later determined to be Silcott, but heard arguing in the background. Police responded, and Silcott said there was no assault but that she had misdialed.
About 9 a.m., police received another call to the home. When Raymond arrived, Silcott told him that her husband had left the home.

"He asked his wife if she had a lighter because he didn't smoke," Raymond said. "He grabbed what appeared to be toilet paper and lit it on the electric stove. When he carried it upstairs, it pretty much went out. She grabbed the embers and threw it out the window."
Corona-Mesa fled in her purple 1992 Mercury Cougar.
Raymond said Silcott took a shower before he arrived, but still smelled strongly of gasoline. She told Raymond the two were married May 22 but that she didn't know much about her husband. She also told police that her husband did not speak much English.
Police went to Tatano Wire on Iron Street in Canonsburg to talk with three of his fellow Mexican co-workers who told Raymond that Corona-Mesa did not show up for work Saturday.
Another officer called Raymond while he was at Tatano's and told him that a car matching the description was headed his way. Raymond motioned for Corona-Mesa to pull over. Corona-Mesa instead took off, only to surrender after a block-and-a-half pursuit.
The federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency was contacted. Police Chief James Horvath said he has been told by ICE that they only will become involved if the alien is being charged with a crime. He did not receive a response from ICE on Monday.
"We are finding more Mexicans living in the area," Horvath said.
The arrest comes five years after North Strabane Township police arrested five Mexican nationals for assaulting a countryman. Three of those arrested also worked for Tatano Wire. The five did not face trial but were released to ICE.
Corona-Mesa was arraigned before District Judge Joshua Kanalis on charges of attempted homicide, attempted arson, reckless endangerment and aggravated assault. Raymond said the arraignment was done using a translater from AT&T set up by a dispatcher at the 911 center.
Kanalis put him in jail without bond after learning from police that Corona-Mesa had his Mexican passport with him along with $300 and clothing. Silcott said he told her he was going back to Mexico.
Corona-Mesa is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Central Court.

Should someone be checking the wire co. out seems like there might be a problem there
TATANO STEEL HIRING ILLEGALS : 8/11/2009
HIRE AMERICANS TATANO. DO YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY?
tatano wire : 8/11/2009
it's no wonder us american's can't find work when this company is employing mexicans. are these people legal......i suggest the district attorney look in to this situation and check it out. these out of country people sound like trouble to me!!!!! obama is probably covering their health insurance too!!!!!! wake up america !
NO ONE WILL WORK : 8/11/2009
Tatano's only care about stuffing their pockets with cash. If they would pay their employee's a livable wage, maybe they could hire locals instead of immigrants who are willing to work for peanuts.
lazy americans : 8/11/2009
there are plenty of jobs for americans its just that your to lazy and ignorant to get a job. maybe you should spend less time blaming obama and mexicans for your short comings. obviously americans dont have domestic disputes so lets blame mexicans for everything
Come on in! : 8/11/2009
"Horvath said he has been told by ICE that they only will become involved if the alien is being charged with a crime." So does that mean.."Come on in, stay until you commit a crime and get caught!"????!!
It Has To Be A Typo! : 8/11/2009
He didn't really pour gasoline all over her and then ask HER for a lighter??? Hey honey I want to stab you can you get a knife for me from the kitchen please. If this dosent make the world stubidest something what will?
"Mexican national" : 8/11/2009
C'mon, O-R! Call him what he (and his friends) are: illegal aliens. The people in this county should go outside of Tatano Wire and protest, because Tatano is essentially "outsourcing" jobs. Watch out, Washington County, I have lived in several other states that have caved to illegals, and there are sections of towns that are overrun by them. Do you want that here? His "wife" needs to be thrown in jail for aiding a criminal. And, ICE needs better rules, all of them need to be taken back to Mexico, they should be charged with the crime of being here illegally. It will be too late when teachers at Wash High or Trinity have to be fluent in Spanish to keep their jobs...
illegals..... : 8/11/2009
ICE won't become involved unless he's being charged with a crime???? So .....what DO they do? What a waste of taxpayer money. Tatano Wire should be investigated for hiring illegals. No problem with people wanting to come to this country...but it MUST be done legally and by the book.
Illegal aliens : 8/11/2009
I'll take all the hard working illegal aliens that cross the border in exchange for the welfare rats in Southwestern PA who have absolutely no motivation for working. I;m tired of the cradle to grave mentality that people on welfare have as their philosophy. Get a job, keep it, and be responsible.
Lock and Load : 8/11/2009
More cheap labor weighing on our public resources, e.g. law enforcement and the courts. Soon, we will be giving -- and I do mean GIVING -- them more than Welfare checks. They will receive guaranteed hospitalization. Business and industry sees no problem, because they are welfare rats as well.
Immigrants vs Ignorance : 8/11/2009
Why does everyone assume that every Mexican working in America is illegal? They come here on WORK VISAS! They also pay taxes! I'm not saying that there are no illegal Mexicans working anywhere, but I'm sick of the negativity! They are just people - people who are willing to and do work hard and complain little. Some Mexians, like this one, are complete idiots. And so are some Americans. Quit feeling so special just because you were lucky enough to be born in a country that is just a few miles away from the one you want to "send them all back to!" Go ahead and send back the bad seeds...but send the lazy, degenerate, wife-beating Americans with them too!
Racist Police : 8/11/2009
Look at this quote, "We are finding more Mexicans living in the area," Horvath said. . Is the police chief racist or what?!? What if he was the police chieft of, say, an all white area and he said, "We are finding more black people in the area". That would cause him to lose his job, I'm certain of it. I'm disgusted for how people are attacking hispanics or a domestic dispute that could have been committed by anyone no matter what the color of their skin, their race, ethnicity, or nationality.
look inward before u speak : 8/11/2009
sounds like you are a wet back yourself...go back to your own country and leave ours to the hard working americans.
SET WIFE ON FIRE : 8/11/2009
I have no sympathy for Tanya Silcott. First, she should have not married some Mexican National that she hardly knows, should not have married some Mexican National that can not speak English, sounds like she was desparate for a husband and married the first thing that came along. She should not be dating or marrying outside her race. That's why GOD created seperate races, if GOD wanted all this inter-mingling and inter-breeding, HE would have only created one race. This Mexican will be out on bond in no time and he will be free to do the same thing again.
Immigrants vs Ignorance : 8/11/2009
No problem show your legal by producing your paperwork. If you do you can stay otherwise its back you go, Whats wrong with that?
Sick of It : 8/12/2009
I know for a FACT that illegal aliens work at this plant. ICE will come in and fine Tatano's and send their little buddies packing back across the border, but sure enough next week they will have a new bus load at the door waiting to work. And the reason they complain little is because they do it in spanish and you don't hear it.
Illegal Mexicans : 8/12/2009
The problem is apathy: http://www.policeone.com/border-patrol/articles/1863247-Wheres-the-national-bleeping-outrage/
Grow up People! : 8/16/2009
Get over the fact that Illegal’s are taking over our jobs. What are we doing as citizens to be competitive for these jobs? And to be honest there are not too many Americans that want to do dirty jobs, because they are too good for that. Someone has to do it.
