Police received information that Stevens had been visiting relatives in Newell. When police spoke to him, he said he had an argument with his girlfriend on the telephone and became extremely angry. He said he punched a stop sign, then grabbed a rock from nearby railroad tracks and threw it toward Third Street, not realizing that Johnson's car was approaching the stop sign. He told police he was sorry for hurting Combs.
Stevens was arraigned before District Judge Jesse Cramer and released on $10,000 unsecured bond.
