Canon-McMillan senior Chad Hagan visited two doctors Thursday in hope of being cleared to play football for the entire 2009 season. Hagan didn't hear the words he wanted, but the news proved encouraging.

Hagan, who was diagnosed with a heart condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome in April while preparing to have surgery for a stress fracture in his shin, will not play in Canon-McMillan's scrimmage tonight at Kiski or in the season opener at Trinity.

If the Ohio State University recruit continues to progress at his current rate, he'll line up at running back and in the secondary when Canon-McMillan opens its Class AAAA Great Southern Conference schedule at Upper St. Clair on Oct. 2.

"As of right now, I'll be ready for section play and be able to get in five games," Hagan said Thursday night. "I've gotten extremely better."

Until then, Hagan will continue to participate in team activities that do not involve contact.

"We're very, very pleased with the results," Canon-McMillan football coach Guy Montecalvo said. "The single most important thing is he's getting healthy. He's shown outstanding improvement."

Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which created a rapid heartbeat and put stress on Hagan's heart, is a treatable condition.

Hagan underwent a medical procedure last month and has taken medication since. As of Thursday, he found out his Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome has disappeared.

"It's completely gone," said Hagan, who must continue to monitor his health and take medication.

Hagan did not inform Ohio State's coaching staff of his condition but, according to Hagan, the Buckeyes have maintained contact with members of Canon-McMillan's coaching staff throughout the process. Schools are not permitted to speak about recruits until they sign a National Letter of Intent.

"They said they want me on their team and they're owning up to the commitment. I just have to keep in touch with them," Hagan said. "That was my biggest concern. I was worried and that takes a lot of weight and stress off my shoulders."

Now, Hagan can sweat the small stuff, like missing the annual non-conference game against Trinity.

"It's been rough and I'll be itching to play but I think the whole experience has helped me grow as a player and a human being," he said. "Coach (Montecalvo) and I have talked a lot and he told me how proud he is to see I'm maturing from this situation."

Glad to read that Chad's getting over his health issues. In addition to being the athlete that he is, he's a great kid and he deserves all the accolades. Good luck this season and at OSU!!
