Trinity site of protest: Westboro Baptist Church plans Oct. 4 stop at local high school

Members of the Kansas-based church who believe the deaths of U.S. troops are God's punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality have planned a protest at Trinity High School in October.

Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka is planning an Interstate 70 GodSmack tour from the church to Washington, D.C., with numerous stops along the way.

It details its itinerary for protests on its website and does not give any specific reason for choosing Trinity, except to say it's the next stop on the I-70 tour. The protest will occur during the high school's dismissal on Oct. 4. The church did not respond to an e-mail Wednesday asking why Trinity was chosen for the protest.

However, on its itinerary, the church accuses parents and teachers "across this doomed nation" of raising their children for the devil and said "so-called adults teach the students to be vain, selfish, sinful, violent, lusty, God-hating brats who turn the grace of our God into lasciviousness."

"I won't comment on ignorance," Trinity Superintendent Paul Kasunich said Wednesday when asked about the reasons for the church's planned protest.

However, he said, the church sent a letter to North Franklin Township police about its constitutionally protected plan to protest at the school.

Kasunich said he doesn't know why the church picked Trinity. He suspects its because the group is traveling through the region and Trinity is a big district with name recognition along the path being taken.

He said he will meet with North Franklin police to discuss security during the protest. There will be additional security, he said.

The church members have the legal right to protest, but Kasunich said he will not allow protesters to jeopardize the health and safety of students and staff.

The church is known for its members going to the funerals of fallen service members and holding up signs that say "God Hates Fags."

God hates any perverted abomination before Him, it does not matter where or who its coming from. : 9/2/2010
That includes religious hypocrites who may have picked "Trinity" because it has religious sounding connotations. "God hates fags" is a perversion in itself. God does not hate people, He hates the sin, but loves the "sinner". After all, who has not sinned some how, some way? No one that I know except God Himself. He stands alone in Holiness and the only way we can stand before Him is by His Grace and His work at the Cross. That's the true teachings. These people are following false teachings and their actions speak louder than their words. America is suffering because of corrupt leaders, period.

Time for Americans to stand up for their Constitutional rights and freedoms or lose them forever.

Wow... : 9/2/2010
The actions of the braintrust of this "church" are maniacal and their history of protesting is nothing short of inflammatory and hateful. They do nothing to promote peace, love, or acceptance, and wish only to spew their bitter vitriol wherever they can. I have watched this group with concern (and some distain) for some time, but I never thought they would ever find this corner of the world to protest. I urge everyone who finds this appalling to participate in a peaceful counter-rally to protect the students of the school and to demonstrate that this level of hatred will not be tolerated.

Protest : 9/2/2010
These are the same people who were chased out of WV during the Sago Mine Disaster. Sure add extra protection, but what about citizens being there to protest the insane minds of the members of Westboro? I say parents and community member show up too, and protest the existance of such hateful people.

I checked out Westboro Baptist Church online this morning. They are nothing more than a hate group. It is apparent that they don't like Jewish or black people either. I don't know about thier god, but mine does not hate.

In-Service day... : 9/2/2010
Give them the permit that is good for ONE specific day - then schedule an in-service day for that day - that would also be a good day to have the parking lots pressure washed or re-surfaced..

so called church : 9/2/2010
this 'group' is one of the most despicable supposed christians that exist. the kkk group that was here a number of years ago was laughable in comparison. indicative that we have extreme groups here that rival the most intolerant in the world. they may not exhibit the level of physical violence, but certainly reach the level of hate.

What about seperation of church and state : 9/2/2010
This is a religious group at a public (state) schoo;. Its illegal to have a prayer at gradution but this crap is OK. it makes me sick. The township/county/state and US government need to stop this.

Are you serious? : 9/2/2010
These people are jagoffs...isn't there a way to ban these people? Who in their right mind would protest fallen soliders funerals? I can't believe this crap! Maybe these idiots should realize that all people are loved...well maybe not them. They make me sick!!!!

Westboro Baptist Church : 9/2/2010
It is a shame that a "church" corrupts God's love for all who turn to Him. It is beyond me that a group can equate those who serve our country to this church's hate-mongering. He who is without sin cast the first stone.

Do not confuse : 9/2/2010
For anyone that hasn't made the distinction yet, PLEASE do not confuse these people with real Christians. They seem no better than those they protest, and they have a very skewed view of God. So if you are tempted, don't use this group to justify any thoughts you may or have had that all Christians are crazy, or "this is why I don't want anything to do with church". These people give real, honest, loving followers of the Creator of the Universe and His Son Jesus an unbelievably bad name. And what will protesting at a high school w/ no apparent connection to what they stand for going to accomplish? I like the inservice day idea posted above.

ME

Westboro : 9/2/2010
I suggest that everyone who is against this protest by the loonies at Westboro to show up on October 4th and counter protest. The reason why they (Westboro) continue to do this is because people ignore them in hope they'll go away. If Westboro has to deal with a crowd protesting them then they'll get the message. So meet me there, bring your signs, it doesn't matter what your sign says, just as long as it makes fun of Westboro Baptist Church. And you Christians out there, get off your duff, wonder why people look down on you? You want these Westboro loonies to be the media represenitive of you? DO IT!!!

WHAT?!!! Is this to occur on school property while the children are leaving school ? If so, how can this be legal ? Is any Tom, Dick or Harry allowed to be at my child's school as they are leaving? Someone please let me know because if they are I am removing my child from school immediately !

Thank You ME! : 9/2/2010
I so appreciate your words. These people are not Christians, they are under the belief that it is their task to persecute and spread hate. As a Christian Pastor of voer 25 years, I am here to tell you what they represent is not what the word of God says we ought to be doing.

ME TOO!

TRINITY HIGH SCHOOL : 9/2/2010
I for one will be there and I hope every and I mean EVERY parent of a TRINITY HIGH SCHOOL student is to. We need to teach our children this kind of protest is not aceptable at any level . I WILL be there bright and early with my child so that he can learn frist hand what true HATE really looks like.

Westboro : 9/2/2010
And having counter-protesters show up is just what these despicable people want It gives them the credibility they are looking for. While I understand that the O-R has to cover the "news," it would be better if the media in general ignored this scum. That would, to some degree, defeat their purpose.

They are protesting for attention. Do not have your child at school that day, do not be anywhere near the area and do not cover this event in the press. These are all things they want. The best thing to do is to not engage them and totally ignore them. Let them protest to themselves !

I agree. we , as responsible parents must keep All of our Trinity Area students at home on that date. If the township won't stop this and the school board keeps the school open, we can shut it donw by keeping ALL students at all trinity district schoo;s at home.

Ignore them : 9/2/2010
The best course of action is to ignore this 'protest'. These folks thrive on confrontation and a counter protest is exactly what they want--even better if it escalates. Although I don't necessarily agree with closing school that day, I think early dismissal or something that will minimize contact with these individuals would be best. These hate groups don't do well when no one is yelling back at them since they need an angry response to get attention.

Isolate them!

Westboro : 9/2/2010
The people of Westboro have truly lost their way. The Bible does not condone homosexuality, however it does plainly say they will know we are followers of Jesus by our LOVE for each other. God loves each of us equally, and His Son died for all of us, not just the ones who believe. If these people come here we must show them how true christians act, with Love.

Westboro Baptist Church : 9/2/2010
As a retired USAF CMSGT, and as a citizen of this great nation of ours, I do not believe that we have any place in this great country of ours for such a HATE group... I just think it terrible that we, who have so gratefully served this great country of ours, must witness this group who calls themselves a religious group but nothing more than a hate group... I just wish we could rid this country of all hate groups...

Shu Shumaker

In service day : 9/2/2010
I like the "in service day" idea. No attention what-so-ever directed their way. And it might not be a bad idea to have the lot power washed. Anyways, it would probably be a good idea to not have any kids or teacher's at the school that day just for saftey reasons.

HTC

Don't give in IGNORE THEM! : 9/2/2010
This group wants the attention that’s how they get their hateful message out. The media will be there to cover the story. What the story should be in the end this hate group showed up and no one give them the time of day. My suggestion is for everyone to go about their normal day, ignore them, they’ll move on. Confrontation is what they’re seeking, I say don’t indulge them. They have a constitutional right to protest, but I’m pretty sure that legally the school district and township have just as much right to keep them of school property. Think about it no one can enter a school now days without permission. Try loitering on school property and see how quickly your removed from the premise. This group thrives on being hysterical we don’t have to return it in kind. If we all ignore them they actually have no one to protest to other then themselves.

It's about attention-seeking behavior : 9/2/2010
As with most of these groups, this is all about power. These groups feel powerless particualrly as society changes and moves further away from what they believe. So, in their minds, these outrageous protests are a way to feel powerful--make other people angry and hurt them in unimaginable ways (saying that your son or daughter deserved to die and is rotting in hell because God hates America). This is the response they want and need to make themselves feel better and to get their adrenaline pumping. I agrre with the other posters. Ignore them. Go about your business as best you can. The media will cover them but that won't be enough for them. This is a hate cult made up of one family from Kansas. They aren't worth a response at all other than us turning our backs on them.

Just keep them off school property.

Go Away! : 9/2/2010
I went to Trinity and I am sickened that those chose my alma mater. Parents, protect your children that day. There will be small children who get on those buses from a Catholic school there too. Trinity is not a hateful school. Can anything be done to physically stop them?

I am a Trinity High School Student! : 9/2/2010
As a current senior at Trinity High School, I feel that this is rediculous! There are so many students who are now up in arms over this horrible event. Students need to ignore this; however, there are plans of protest from the student body on the day of October 4. We need to just ignore this! But sadly that WILL NOT happen! So please, any support for us students who do care is what we need!!!

Promote tolerance Trinity! : 9/2/2010
Taken directly from Trinity’s website: “The mission of the Trinity Area School District as a partner with parents and the community is to provide every student with the skills and knowledge to make informed decisions as a responsible, self-directed, technology literate, and culturally aware citizen.” As a Trinity alum, I find this appalling that this protest will take place on Trinity’s campus. Have the protest elsewhere, not where students go to get educated. I do not want to have Trinity labeled as a school that allows intolerance, discrimination, and harassment to run amuck. While it is constitutionally legal for the Westboro church to protest, I am curious of Trinity’s official position on this. How does hosting this protest fit into Trinity’s mission statement of creating responsible, self-directed, and culturally aware students? I do applaud Superintendent Kasunich for not “commenting on ignorance.” What’s the plan of attack Kasunich and Snoke? While an inservice day may not be feasible, I’d suggest a tolerance day where students are educated on diversity with guest speakers of different ages, ancestries, color, disability or handicap, national origin, race, religious creed, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status. Do not just sit idle about this. Signed, THS2004

It amazes me that this group hides behind the word of God to practice and spread these despicable messages. Also it makes me sick to think that they keep throwing this "they have the "Right" to do this and do that and them disrupting military funerals. Well I hate to break this too you- you so called religous Group Morons that it was all of these Military Veterans and soldiers that fought and gave their lives to give you the "Right" to spead your message and protest even though your message is downright crazy.

HOW can anyone say ignore the problem, its like saying to ignore CANCER and it will go away. we should stand up for the good things OUR SCHOOL stands for an.Teach our children to counter hate and evil with love, and respect that is what going to get these people not us yelling and screaming back.WHAT if this group of people make this a yearly stop on their hate tour then WHAT TRINTY IS NOT A HATEFUL DISTRICT AND WE SHOULD PROVE THAT TO ANYONE THAT SAYS OTHERWISE .

show them were a loving city not hateful like them

Stephen makes a great point : 9/2/2010
Stephen Cady's comment is right on the money. WBC has a history of making money by suing local governments that block their protests. One of the best responses i've seen is from churches here in New Mexico who parked their church buses along the sidewalk where WBO was permitted to protest, blocking most peoples' view of these haters. Some organizations even held fundraisers, collecting pledges from people based upon how long the WBO haters kept up their protest. Don't try to stop them, instead think of ways to turn their "protest" against them. Do something to focus media attention on the community's response against WBO's hate rather than the WBO haters themselves.

i feel they should just close school that day, stop the traffic in the area for their brief protest and send them on there way. they"ll feel as though they accomplished nothing on their missions if there is no one around. they look for trouble and if know one is around then that will be better for the children and for the police force.

Its obvious these people who call themselves Baptsts don't actually read the Bible. God does not hate gay people anymore than He hates people who steal, murder, etc as He does not hate people, He hates our sins. God is a forgiving God too, He will forgive us our vilest sins IF we confess. It just amazes me how people will twist the Bible for their own agendas. Do I believe God will judge America for our sins one day? Yes, but these people thrive on attention, lets not give it to them.

Will the motorcycle groups, who show up at military funerals to block the view of this sick group from the bereaved, be allowed to do the same at Trinity? i can not believe this. god is love. this is the reason no one wants to attend church or have a relationship with God. they are going about this all wrong. yes there are things in the bible that the Lord points out as sin. but let he who is perfect cast the first stone. im a christian an i do not for one moment believe this is what god intended. we are called to love others. not bash or judge them. Lord hav mercy on their ignorance.

Winners : 9/2/2010
Reading the comments that suggest boycotting the day at school, either by keeping students at home or declaring an in service day, makes for declaring a winner. With these suggestions Westboro has already been made the winner, regardless of what happens at the protest. Whenever anybody makes a decision to change their own plans because of the actions of others, the white flag has been thrown.

Protests in general : 9/2/2010
I'm shocked at the number of people who want this protest stopped. Why do they want it stopped? Because they disagree with the premise of the Westboro group. What does this say about those wanting it stopped? To me, it says that any protest contrary to my opinion should be squelched by the authorities. Is this really what you want? Since when do we make decisions on lawful protest because we don't like the cause? You folks are headed down a very dangerous path. I believe the cause for the Westboro group is detestable, but I will defend their right to mount the protest. Isn't this a critical component in the freedom of expression that we enjoy? Oh yes, the O-R poll question was very poorly worded, "Yes," "No," "Don't care." A "Y" is not condoning their cause. A "N" is wanting to restrict the ability of the group to protest. Very badly worded, and not well thought out.

Freedom of Expression? : 9/2/2010
There is no such thing. When a person or a group of persons demonstrate in an environment where school age children are present, it is a threat to Homeland Security. Do I have freedom of expression when these protesters show up at a loved one's funeral where I carry a ball bat to extract my price of freedom of 'expression'?

Sick - Angry - Unbelievable : 9/3/2010
This just sickens me that these morons (I'm trying to think what to call them) do this. We live in the land of the free because of our military - both past and present - and then they have the audacity to say that God is punishing the military. These morons have had to have been brainwashed at some point - I mean, am I that naive to think that there are people that truly believe things like this? It's so sad and we all need to pray for these people. And, in the meantime, I have a question about this happening at Trinity at dismissal. There is a sign that reads no admittance to the lot during certain hours - and one of those being dismissal time, so why would these people be allowed to go on to that campus to do this? Isn't there any legal way to keep them off the grounds?

Other Options : 9/3/2010
Instead of this event happening at Trinity, I have other options for them to stage their protest. 1: Washington Cemetary; 2: Consol Park (around that time , they should be digging up the field to replace the turf - maybe we can bury some bodies there); 3: Arden Landfill. I hope the media stays far away from these people this day - I hope Trinity sends the kids home early (it can happen - early dismissal would be the route to go); I hope the neighbors that live on Park Avenue stay in their homes and do not give them time of day - Why can't NF Police shut down Park Avenue between that area so no cars can even come in to watch it. If they don't have an audience for their show - they're not getting their point across. it's such a shame that we have so many lost and hateful people living in this great country of ours. The military is responsible for so many of our freedoms and these people are literally spitting in their faces. God Help Them.

I agree with Mr. Cady. : 9/3/2010
I found this on the internet, “Counter-protesting against the group, they suggest, gives them attention and incentive that they do not deserve; and a more effective response against Phelps would be to ignore his congregation completely. WBC, through the closely related Phelps Chartered law firm, (the man’s daughter is a lawyer I saw her on televison once) has collected fees under the Civil Rights Attorney’s Fees Award Act of 1976 when their protests have been unlawfully disrupted.” In other words you cannot stop them from coming onto the Trinity High School Campus. If you try to block them they will sue & they know they will win. The best thing to do is to ignore them and keep the children home that day. It would also really be helpful if the news stayed away also. Why give them any press time. I don’t think what they are doing is worthy of anyone’s attention.

Look to the bright side... : 9/3/2010
I always look for the positive in any situation. I would have to say at least they are not coming here to protest a military funeral and we have had a couple that they could have shown up for. We can always keep our children out of school that day. Also I believe it is something occurring in Washington County that has just about all of us on the same page. And when was the last time we all agreed on anything? A great learning experience to teach our children on how society rejects these outcast and why. Maybe some of our area religious leaders could congregate up town in front of our courthouse and hold a prayer vigil during that time on that day. Or on Trinity’s campus at 4PM after they have departed to cleanse the grounds.

West Boro Church using the terms religion and church is the largest example of taking the lords name in vain I have ever noted. The lord does not hate, ridicule or mock. We make our choices and pay the price at judgement day. Why do these people who have no respect for laws, the flag or the rights of fellow americans find it within their own fervor to utilize the laws of the constitution to protect their own behavior and beliefs. Definition of hypochracy= Using the same beliefs and laws that you publicly scoff, mock and disregard to hide behind and utilize as the pinnacle to forward your own interests.

If you are interpreting that comment as ignorant then you are interpreting it wrong. My intention was to allude to the idea that these people are mostly likely turning their internal struggle with sexuality outwards. They hate gays because gays remind them of their own true sexuality which for some reason has been demonized in their minds. They are self loathing. I thought it would be justice served to make them realize this. My comment was not meant to be ignorant I apologize.

The Church age ended in 1988- God does not use the churches to share his plan for salvation any longer. www.familyradio.com has what they claim to be the truth about religion and the rapture- I must admit, their numbers do make sense- why not read what they have to say, then make up your own mind about the so-called Churches? SM interesting question. If memory serves me correctly there was a big dust up because a certain person wanted to speak to the nation school children about this time last year. I can’t remember the course of action the Trinity School District finally took, but I believe there was some hysteria exhibited by the administration and some parents. Seriously, the guy last year said nothing controversial and there was a move to keep him from speaking, so this should be a no-brainer for Trinity.

Westboro Protest : 9/4/2010
Charlie Manson worshipped Satan. These idiots must be some sort of off spring?? They protest at military funerals, schools etc. Cowards. This is Western Pa. Home of the brave. Bring these idiots on. Allow me and mine our right to protest. Show up in mass, support this great country. See you there. God Bless Our Troops.

sounds like the kind of group sarah palin would support............since this group backed her and mccain and bush in the previous election

Any one think they picked Trinity because of the Post being next door? : 9/4/2010
They may have picked this area because of the Post being next door. They don't have a funeral to make their comments at so why not do something near the Post of our military. I don't agree with this being held near young students. These children aren't going to understand why this is going on. The older children may have a better understanding of this but they shouldn't have to be a part of this. Don't encourage hate with more hate. Let them have their time and don't let them make us act like them.

Trinity : 9/4/2010
the protesters will NOT be on the school grounds. if any of them set foot on the campus, legal action will be taken. our school grounds are private and no one but the students, parents and staff are allowed.

They've been here before : 9/4/2010
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church have been in this area twice that I know of. They picketed at the military funerals of Matthew Hunter of West Alexander and Russell Culbertson in Bridgeville. Both times members of the Patriot Guard shielded the families from the picketers and their signs.

Since when did a public school become private grounds? Sorry, but isn't Trinity a taxpayer funded school, not a private school?

Peaceful Protest : 9/5/2010
Though anger is perfectly understandable, violence against WBC is no way to handle this situation. Like the rest of us human beings in The United States, they are entitled to voice their opinions. Though I disagree with their opinions, for I truly believe that God loves the world, I will not disregard their human rights. Any Christians reacting to WBC with violence is only further distorting the Christian image. Therefore, after my day at Trinity High School (for I am a student there), I plan to peacefully counter protest with Biblical evidence to support God’s love for all His children. (:

Protest : 9/5/2010
these people WILL NOT be on school grounds, if they do steph on school grounds they are going to be arrested. We had a class meeting the other day in which Mr. Snoke (Our principal) told us this!

Makes me sick! : 9/6/2010
As a 20+ year service member currently in Afghansitan and a graduate of THS this disgusts me to think the district would allow this to take place. I do hope the Patriot Gaurd show up to this protest.

Value of this protest : 9/6/2010
I have disdain for the Westboro group, and place no value on what they are doing. What is much greater value is the response by the citizens. I don't know if the comments posted here reflect a good cross section of the public opinion, but I no reason to think otherwise (unless advocates overload these boards, entirely possible). Consider what has been posted. The response ranges from ignore, counter-protest, cancel school, make an in-service day, stupidity of the District for allowing the protest, action of the School Board, and perhaps others. The Westboro group has already achieved their goal, a negative response to their visit, before stepping foot on the ground. They have gotten the publicity they desire. They've stirred the pot,so to speak, just as they want. What is startling is the negative expressions toward the school for allowing the protest. The only reason cited for not wanting the protest is their message. This is a very disturbing perspective. While their message is disgusting, why are so many people quick to want to remove their right to speak their message? Who are the "thought police" on this issue? Many posts here have taken claim to that position. When you have an issue that others don't like, but yet want to speak your message, are you willing to be squelched in your intentions to speak it out? The sword works both ways. Again, I don't like what they have to say one bit. But, I am very concerned about those who want to take the mantle of policing what is said in the public square, and what is policed out.

Ring our bell : 9/8/2010

This Church is Whacko. WBC is making us Christians look bad. Only God can put judgment on a person It is up to us to teach, but we can't force a person to listen and agree let alone follow the 10 commandments, Christ asks us to pray for their salvation, not be cruel and wish them dead..

It's all about $ : 9/11/2010
They are hateful; they are all related to each other; they aren't baptist or Christian. But they have sued the parents of a fallen veteran for interferring with their protest at a funeral and they won. Ya'll be careful and I like the water balloon party.

To pl : 9/11/2010
pl, please refrain from writing such ridiculous nonsense on a public forum. Really? You're right...I'm sure just because political figures are supported by nut jobs, that means the political figures are totally cool with the nut jobs? Grow up and try actually getting a clue before you post next time!

They had to come while I am away : 9/12/2010
I am study in Barcelona Spain for the fall semester and they just had to come to my area while I am away. I have watched the garbage that this goups speeks all over the internet. I ofeten thought that if I did cross their paths that I would join a protest against them. But I think this is what they want. I think this sinister group has gotten enough attention. SO maybe instead of giving them what they want just go about your daily routines and let as little traffic though the area as possible.

goose versus gander : 9/13/2010
Hey, if they shouldn't build the mosque in NYC because of the so-called feelings of the victims' families who eveidently think all Muslims are guitly of 9/11, then certainly all Christians are just as guilty of thes hateful antics perpetrated in the name of the Christian god. Don't expect us to be able to tell the difference in one case and not the other.

Don't be there : 10/2/2010
This group thrives on people protesting them. They are a bunch of lawyers posing as pastors and they make their money suing for a living. don't fall into the trap.

They accuse many of sins but are oh so guilty of the sin of pride in that they profess to know the will of god better than those disciples of his who recorded his will as love for all mankind. What fools they are that take the lord's words in vain for false fame.
