A Smith Township man was arrested Saturday night by township police after allegedly shooting his friend in the chest.

Anthony Lloyd Ferguson, 42, of 785 Joffre-Bulger Road, is accused of shooting Larry Stevens, 38, of McDonald. Ferguson told police the shooting was an accident, said township police Chief Bernie LaRue.

"The two are friends," LaRue said of Ferguson and Stevens. "Ferguson had gotten the gun, a .357-caliber, from a friend about a year ago. He told us that he did not realize there was a bullet in the chamber."

"He said he jokingly pointed the gun at Stevens at close range and pulled the trigger," he added. "The gun went off and Stevens was hit in the chest."

When police arrived, they found Stevens lying in the grass next to the driveway at 785 Joffre-Bulger.

Stevens had gone for a ride on a motorcycle and the bike quit running. Ferguson was going to hook up a trailer to his vehicle and go get the motorcycle when Stevens got it running again.

Stevens pulled into the driveway. Ferguson told police he started messing around with him by pointing the gun at him.

LaRue said that Stevens was flown by emergency helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he underwent surgery Sunday morning. A hospital spokeswoman had no information on his condition.

Ferguson did not have a permit to carry the gun, LaRue said. The chief did not know why the friend who owned the gun never retrieved it from Ferguson.

"We're still checking that out," LaRue said.

Ferguson was arraigned via video before District Judge Curtis Thompson on charges of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. He was released from Washington County Jail after posting $35,000 straight bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 16 before District Judge Gary Havelka.
