'50s Fest back in town

This article has been read 848 times.

WAYNESBURG - Continuing an 8-year-old tradition, for one day in September, downtown Waynesburg will be filled with the sounds of 1950s rock 'n' roll hits. Poodle skirts and bobby socks will be back in style, and more than 200 classic cars, trucks and motorcycles will be parked on High Street.

It's all part of the Annual '50s Fest & Car Cruise, which will be held in downtown Waynesburg from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event, which is hosted by Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful and sponsored in part by Hot Rod's House of Bar-B-Que and WANB Radio, offers an assortment of 1950s-era activities along with the car show.

"This year's '50s Fest is shaping up to be our best year yet," said Doug Wilson, chairman of the '50s Fest committee and DJ for WANB Radio.

"There will be plenty of great hot rods, street rods, classic cars, trucks and motorcycles, as well as a special Saturday edition of WANB's oldies show, 'Greene County Gold,' broadcast live from the steps of the Greene County Courthouse. We will have a twist contest, a limbo contest and a bubble gum blowing contest. There's really something for everyone, and we pass out dozens of great prizes all day long."

In addition to viewing the cars, trucks and motorcycles on display, '50s Fest attendees will have the opportunity to watch classic movies at the historic Waynesburg Theater & Arts Center, participate in '50s trivia contests and shop in downtown Waynesburg's specialty stores. Children's activities are also planned throughout the festival.

According to Wilson, the '50s Fest attracts a variety of people to downtown Waynesburg. "All kinds of people come out for '50s Fest," he said. "There are car lovers who are there to admire the vehicles. Then there are the folks who grew up in that era who come out to relive that part of their lives."

A highlight of this year's '50s Fest & Car Cruise is the collectible pedal car raffle. One authentic pedal car, which has been customized with sporty purple flames and its own electric motor by T&A Auto Services of Carmichaels, will be raffled off during the festival. This miniature hot rod is currently on display in the front window of Hot Rod's House of Bar-B-Que on Washington Street.

Raffle tickets for the pedal car are available for $2 each or three for $5 from Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful or '50s Fest committee members.

There are no admission or registration fees.

"We're looking forward to having everyone come out for this year's '50's Fest, whether you're cruising in a hot rod or just coming to enjoy the day," Wilson said. "Everyone is welcome."
