GREENVILLE - Washington & Jefferson rallied from a 10-7 first half deficit, scored 20 unanswered points, and knocked off Thiel, 34-24, in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday.

The victory puts W&J at 3-0, while Thiel is winless in three games.

Chuck Grabner hit a 33-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, and connected on a 31-yarder with 1:38 remaining in the third quarter for the Presidents. In between, Dave Ravida caught a four-yard touchdown pass, and Kevin Mathews went in from five yards out.

Thiel built its 10-7 lead on a 64-yard touchdown pass from Willie Bova to Tim Van Horn and a 43-yard field goal by John Madeline 7:03 before the half.

Craig Besong caught a 47-yard touchdown from Swallow that tied the game, 7-7, and Terrence McCallister scored on a seven-yard run with 11:50 to play that stretched W&J's lead to 34-17.

McCallister had 47 yards on 19 carries and Mathews 41 on six. Derek Taylor rushed for 39 on seven. The trio helped ease the absence of Curt Jones, who missed the game with a sprained ankle.

Swallow completed 21 of 35 passes for 258 yards and was not intercepted.

Van Horn caught four passes for 133 yards for the Tomcats. Bova completed 13 of 26 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns.
