NORTH STRABANE - The company that owns The Meadows Racetrack & Casino donated 2.25 acres of land to North Strabane Township Tuesday for a new fire and police substation.

The 64,000-square-foot facility will be located at 430 Johnson Road, near the casino, and is expected to be completed by this time next year. It will house fire equipment and personnel and provide administrative space for police officers.

It will be the third fire station in the township: one is on Route 19, and the other is on Thomas-Eighty Four Road in Eighty Four. There are three buildings on the Johnson Road site that were once used for horse racing that need to be demolished before construction can begin, according to Brian Spicer, chairman of the township's board of supervisors.

At a news conference outside The Meadows, Spicer also said construction of the building will be paid for entirely by revenue generated from the casino, "and not cost one dime of taxpayer money."

"It will greatly enhance the protection of the community," he said.

Bill Paulos, one of the chief executive officers of Cannery Casino Resorts, which owns The Meadows, said North Strabane "has been awfully good to us, and we try to do good as well."

Property owners near the casino could also see a reduction in their insurance premiums because of the proximity of the new fire station, Paulos said.

David Climans, of the Toronto-based architectural firm Climans Green Liang Architects Inc., will design the building. Climans also designed The Meadows, and the facade of the fire and police substation will be consistent with the casino's appearance.

Meadows up to the usual tricks : 9/23/2009
Property tax breaks? Ha ha ha. How generous of the meadows to built their own fire and police outposts to protect their vault. They already have their own built in State police station. I guess that;s not enough, Hey taxpayers, it's all about the Meadows and not about you.
