The reclamation of the Mather coal refuse pile, begun with a state Growing Greener grant in September 2001, is nearing completion.

Phase One of the project, costing about $1.7 million, excavated 700,000 cubic yards of refuse, relocating it to an adjacent property over 23 months. At the time, the highest point of the pile was 1,076 feet and 226 feet above Ten Mile Creek.

The contractors, Mather Recovery Systems, also protected 1,600 feet of creek bank from flooding and erosion with large stone, ditching, benching and erection of a sediment pond.

Supervisors rezone old North Waynesburg plan

WAYNESBURG - Residents of the old North Waynesburg plan who petitioned Franklin Township to impose tighter zoning controls on their neighbors got their wish Monday.

Supervisors adopted an amendment to the township's zoning ordinance during their regular meeting, which will rezone a large area immediately north of borough of Waynesburg.

Previously, the small area of residential housing that supervisors estimated at 50 to 70 acres was zoned A-1 for agricultural uses. Monday's resolution includes the homes in an R-1 residential area, putting more restrictions on what can be built there.

Agreement to be signed today for river trail

An agreement to be signed today between county commissioners and Greene County Industrial Development Authority marks another step in the development of a hiking and biking trail along the Monongahela River, according to Commissioner Farley Toothman.

When fully completed, Monongahela River Trail will follow an abandoned railroad bed a dozen miles along the riverfront from Greene Cove Yacht Club in Jefferson Township to Nemacolin Mine. It will form a critical piece of the area's tourism package.

Today's agreement is necessary, Toothman said, because the IDA has acted as the grant writer for the county on the project. The authority is also the county's agent for further development along the trail.

Carmichaels Board OKs property sale

The Carmichaels Area School Board agreed to sell the former Carmichaels Borough school property at the corner of Greene and Pine streets to Greene Valley Presbyterian Church for $15,000.

The property consists of one acre. The church, whose property borders the lot, was the sole bidder. The lot has been vacant since 1978 when the former school, which had been converted to the Carmichaels municipal building, was destroyed by fire.

Waynesburg, District 18 undergoing changes

Rudy Marisa can remember some great basketball games in College Gym at Waynesburg College. In fact, he can hardly pick out one game in particular, which was the best.

He struggled for a few seconds and finally proclaimed the 1981 win against St. Vincent, a 47-45 heart-stopper which propelled his Yellow Jackets to their first NAIA District 18 championship.

Plan accepted for support of school site

CARMICHAELS - The State Department of Public Instruction has approved a plan to eliminate a site problem which has delayed construction of a proposed addition to Carmichaels Area High School.

The plans is to provide subsurface support to eliminate the danger of mine cave-ins on a tract adjoining the present high school, where the addition will be built.
