Hillers hold off Hampton, 21-14
OAKMONT - Mike Yancich's touchdown run capped off a 14-point fourth quarter for Trinity as the Hillers topped Hampton, 21-14, in a non-conference high school football game Friday night.
Trinity (2-1) trailed 14-7 heading into the final quarter after Matt Dukovich's 66-yard punt return on the final play of the third quarter broke a 7-7 halftime tie.
But Ian Haley tossed a 54-yard TD pass to Graham Cowieson with 10:25 left in the game and Yancich, who rushed for 155 yards on 20 carries, rumbled 43 yards to score with 6:33 remaining to give the Hillers the lead.

Andrew Sweat chipped in 80 yards rushing on five carries for Trinity, including a 66-yard TD run in the first quarter. Haley completed 5 of 9 passes for 89 yards.
Zach Smith, who had 103 yards rushing on 17 carries, scored on a 23-yard run in the first quarter for Hampton.
Class AAAA
Canon-McMillan 56, Greater Latrobe 14: Canon-McMillan had three players rush for over 100 yards as the Big Macs gained 463 yards on the ground in a 56-14 non-conference win over Greater Latrobe.
Jeravin Matthews rushed for 121 yards on just six carries, scoring three touchdowns for Canon-McMillan. Mike Hull added 156 yards on 10 attempts with a score, and J.D. Billy chipped in 101 yards on just two rushes - including a 92-yard TD run - for the Big Macs (3-0).
Zane Zebrasky added a pair of 16-yard touchdown passes, going to Brandon Shroeder and Mike Ennis, respectively, as the Big Macs rolled up 508 total yards to just 211 for Latrobe (1-2).
Latrobe scored on a 75-yard kickoff return in the second quarter and a one-yard run by Eric Shaeffer in the third.
Class AA
East Allegheny 26, Washington 20: Monte Ashby rushed for 273 yards, none more important than the nine yards he ran for on his final touchdown, as East Allegheny held off Washington in an Interstate Conference game.
Ashby scored from nine yards out to break a 20-20 tie with 54 seconds remaining in the game and lift East Allegheny to the victory.
Malik Washington caught touchdown passes of 45 and 13 yards to give EA a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.
But Washington (1-2, 1-2) got back into the game when it blocked a field goal attempt in the third quarter and Shawn Vaughn returned it 87 yards for a touchdown. Following a 2-point conversion pass from Chad Smith to Tommy Kelly, the Prexies trailed just 14-8.
But Ashby scored on a 24-yard run to make it 20-8 before Smith connected on a 49-yard score to Ramonte Barfield and Barfield scored on a 33-yard run to tie the game at 20-20.
Smith completed 10 of 21 passes in the game for 125 yards, most of which went to Barfield, who finished with six catches for 123 yards.
South Fayette 14, McGuffey 13: Jon Taglianetti's one-yard touchdown with less than a minute left in the third quarter proved to be the difference as South Fayette rallied from a 10-0 deficit to defeat visiting McGuffey 14-13 in a non-conference game.
Taglianetti also threw a 14-yard TD pass to Kenny Morgan that helped South Fayette (3-0) close the gap to three points inthe first quarter.
McGuffey (1-2) jumped out to the early lead when Bruce Smith scored on a 64-yard run and Matt Regenelli kicked a 32-yard field goal. Regenelli also booted a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter after South Fayette took a 14-10 lead. Smith finished with 77 yards.
Dillon Sauers led the Lions with 84 yards on 22 carries.
Burgettstown 34, Carlynton 6: Dan Conley and Nick Tasz each scored two touchdowns for Burgettstown in a 34-6 win over Carlynton in a Century Conference game.
Conley finished with 66 yards on eight carries while Tasz, who also kicked four extra points, gained 82 yards on just three attempts. Ray Downey caught a TD pass from Brenden Bongiorni, who was five-for-eight for 109 yards for the Blue Devils (2-1, 2-1). Burgettstown rushed for 240 yards and had 358 total yards.
Ryan Curtin scored for Carlynton (0-3, 0-3).
Class A
Serra Catholic 66, Avella 6: Serra blitzed Avella for 46 points in the first quarter and rolled to a 66-6 win in a Black Hills Conference game.
Serra (1-0, 3-0) got two touchdown passes from Chris Heatherington, a pair of touchdown runs from Chris Loving, a touchdown run and fumble recovery in the end zone from Isaiah Jackson, and two safeties in the game's first 12 minutes to put it out of reach.
Another fumble recovery for a touchdown, this one from Loving, and a 38-yard run by Cam Olsen in the second quarter made it 59-0 at the half.
Avella (0-1, 0-3) got on the board with a five-yard touchdown run by Jared Magon in the third quarter before Chris Bryan finished off the scoring for Serra in the fourth with a four-yard TD run.
Monessen 48, Carmichaels 21: Cordero Jackson rushed for 257 yards on 19 carries and scored five rushing touchdowns as Monessen ran past Carmichaels 48-21 in the Tri-County South Conference opener for both teams.
Jackson scored on runs of 27, 33, 30, 13, and 72 yards. Two of the TD's came in the fourth quarter, when the Greyhounds (1-0, 3-0) scored three times to pull away.
Quarterback Adam Caputo completed five of 12 passes for 139 yards and scored on a six-yard run in the first quarter. Monessen racked up 531 total yards.
Ethan Virgili led the Mikes (0-1, 0-3) with 100 yards on 14 rushes and scored on a 51-yard run that made the score 27-13 in the third. Chuck Gasti had three catches for 72 yards for Carmichaels, which was penalized 11 times for 90 yards.
Fort Cherry 40, Frazier 15: Fort Cherry jumped out to a 21-7 lead by halftime and rolled to a 40-15 win over Frazier in the Black Hills Conference.
David Phillips gained 102 yards on 15 attempts and scored two touchdowns. Zachary Crowley also had two TD's, one that opened the scoring in the first quarter and another in the second. Derric Stankus added 90 yards on just seven carries and also scored twice for the Rangers (1-0, 1-2).
Frazier (0-1, 2-1) was held to 75 total yards.
Chartiers-Houston 19, Bentworth 7: Brad Banas carried the ball 12 times for 92 yards and scored two key touchdowns to lead Chartiers-Houston past Bentworth 19-7 in a Black Hills Conference game.
Both of Banas' TD runs were from 19 yards out.
The first was in the first quarter and the second closed out the scoring in the third. Andrew Petras also scored for the Bucs (1-0, 1-2).
Chuck Selvoski scored on a 70-yard run in the third quarter that pulled the Bearcats (0-1. 0-3) to within 12-7. Selvoski finished with 139 yards on 11 attempts.
Mapletown 34, Geibel 6: Brandon Geisel rushed for 117 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns to power Mapletown to a 34-6 victory over visiting Geibel in a Tri-County South Conference game.
Mapletown (1-0, 2-1) rolled up 400 yards total offense and held Geibel (0-1, 1-2) to zero yards rushing on 25 carries.
Geisel had touchdowns runs of 1 and 16 yards in the first quarter and Nick Popernack ran 15 yards for a score that gave the Maples a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. Popernack rushed for 103 yards on 11 carries.
After a Geibel touchdown made it 21-6, Geisel scored on a 15-yard run late in the first half. Chad Glover closed the scoring with a 26-yard TD pass from Cory Minnick midway through the third quarter. Glover led the Mapletown defense with four sacks and 10 tackles.
In other games: Mount Pleasant defeated Ringgold, 25-7, South Park topped Charleroi, 20-7, and Southmoreland shut out Waynesburg, 28-0. No further information was provided to the Observer-Reporter.
