Swallow stays hot at W&J rolls over Oberlin This article has been read 307 times. By Joe Tuscano, Staff writer jtuscano@observer-reporter.com Bobby Swallow is fast becoming a top-flight fantasy football star, if your team is limited to NCAA Division III players.
In his latest masterpiece, Swallow completed 15 of 20 passes for 405 yards and rifled five touchdown passes as the Presidents rolled past Oberlin, 56-26, Saturday at Cameron Stadium. The win moves the Presidents to 3-0 before their PAC opener next week at St. Vincent's. Oberlin lost its third consecutive game. "I can't really say why it's happening," Swallow said. "I think it all starts in practice. I feel good in warmups and I can sort of tell that I'm going to play well." Swallow has thrown 11 touchdown passes in the past two games. More impressive, he has more TD passes (11) than incompletions (10) in that span. "He's hot right now; he's playing real well," said W&J head coach Mike Sirianni. "I know he can do even better. He's one of the best players at studying game film. He wants to be coached and he just continues to get better."
In last week's 54-10 victory over Hanover, Swallow completed 20 of 25 passes for 307 yards and tied a school record with six touchdown passes. Against Oberlin, he came within 15 yards of setting the school's single-game passing yardage record. Chris Edwards set the mark with a 419-yard effort against Allegheny in 2005. In that game, Edwards set an NCAA record for all divisions with 21 consecutive completions to start a game. Swallow's combined totals for the last two games are 35 completions of 45 passes for 712 yards and 11 touchdowns. But the number that matters the most to him is three, the number of W&J wins this season. "For me, to be accurate is more important," Swallow said. "That's one of my goals. My receivers are catching the ball and if we come away with a win, then that's what's important." Before the first quarter ended against Oberlin, Swallow had flipped three touchdown passes, including two to Ryan Church, who as converted to receiver after losing the quarterback battle to Swallow last season. Swallow hit Church from 31 and 45 yards as W&J rolled up a 21-0 lead. The first scoring pass went to Craig Besong from 33 yards. Church has three touchdown receptions in the last three games.
"Ryan is a good football player," Sirianni said. "We moved him to wide receiver instead of having him sit and he's doing a really good job for us." Before the night ended, Swallow found Tom McCafferty for a 65-yard touchdown and Curt Jones for a 65-yard catch-and-run. Jones scored on a 29-yard run to give the Presidents a 35-7 lead at halftime. And he opened the scoring in the second half with a 13-yard run with 10:00 remaining in the third quarter. "They played a defense against us where they left their cornerbacks on an island," said Sirianni. "It was a 3-3 stack, there were five linebackers in the box and they were telling us to throw the ball." Besong and Ravida each had four reception to lead the Presidents. Four wide receivers caught at least one touchdown. W&J's ground game produced 145 yards, led by Jones' 73 on six carries. Oberlin finished with 365 yards but had only 105 at halftime. Quarterback Greg Mangan completed 26 of 35 passes for 211 yards and one touchdown, a 20-yard toss to J.J. Hepp. Hash marks Oberlin has just 49 players on the roster. ... McCafferty's second touchdown of the game came on a seven-yard double-reverse run. ... Chris Schubert led Oberlin with seven receptions for 106 yards. He scored the Yoeman's second touchdown from Andy Stein on a double-pass play.
