Defense lifts Waynesburg to best start since 1999

Observer-Reporter

Thanks to a strong defensive effort and two second-half touchdown passes from freshman quarterback Kyle Kyper to senior tight end Ryan Cronin, the Waynesburg University football team is off to its best start this millennium.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play following a 20-6 win over Thomas More at Dixie Heights High School Stadium in Edgewood, Ky. Waynesburg is 4-0 for the first time since 1999.

Waynesburg limited Thomas More (2-2, 1-2) to 126 total yards and just six first downs, while sophomore running back Cordario Collier had 63 rushing yards on 21 carries. Collier came into the game averaging 162.7 yards per contest.

Meanwhile, freshman tailback Robert Heller turned in another strong performance.

The Ringgold High School graduate rushed for 192 yards on 40 attempts and he caught three passes for 53 yards.

Kyper was a model of efficiency, completing 12 of 16 attempts for 128 yards and the two touchdowns to Cronin.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead for good on a four-yard pass from Kyper to Cronin with 5:48 left in the third quarter. Thomas More fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Waynesburg recovered, which set up a 10-yard touchdown from Kyper to Cronin.
