Meadows driver hurt

Trainer-driver Charlie Norris was injured when he was unseated in a four-horse, chain-reaction accident in the 10th race of Wednesday's card at The Meadows. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

John Marshall, general manager of Meadows Racing, said the initial diagnosis is a muscle tear in the shoulder-collarbone area. He said Norris is resting at home and is scheduled to see a physician today for further evaluation.

None of the other drivers involved - Brian Zendt, Ed McNeight, Jr., Fred Uber, Jr. - appeared to sustain injuries.

Norris, 44, long has been considered a top conditioner and driver of trotters. At one time, The Meadows' track record of 1:54.3 for aged trotters was shared by two horses: Tiff Tuff Tag (2003) and Golly Too (1996). Norris piloted both to their record miles.

In 2003, Norris suffered a compound fracture of the left ankle when a yearling he was jogging careened head-on into a light standard in a morning workout at The Meadows.
