Takeaways turn tide; B-C rolls to victory

FREDERICKTOWN - One of the bigger questions preceding the Beth-Center-Serra Catholic WPIAL football playoff game was whether or not Eagles star quarterback Rob Heatherington would suit up.

Heatherington injured his shoulder in the team's Week 9 game and his status was in doubt. Well, not only did he play, his presence had a key influence in determining the winner.

But it's not who you might think.

Beth-Center's staunch defense forced Heatherington into four turnovers and five total by Serra, and a 21-point, three-minute stretch turned a close game into a rout as the Bulldogs earned a 38-17 victory over Serra to advance to the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals.

"Our game plan was to limit their quarterback," said B-C coach Ed Woods. "He's dangerous running or passing."

The Bulldogs (8-2) did just that, but the early half of the third quarter is what took most of the game's drama away.

Beth-Center led 17-10 at halftime and started the second half with the football. After a 55-yard kickoff return by Deshan Brown, the Bulldogs opened with a short field. They needed just five plays to score, when quarterback Sal Faieta rolled out and scampered 16 yards for a touchdown and a 24-10 lead.

Then the wheels came off for Serra (7-3).

On third down on Serra's ensuing possession, Heatherington was sacked and fumbled. Faieta recovered the loose ball, and it took Beth-Center just one play to score, on a quick 29-yard run by Brown. The score was 31-10.

It didn't stop there.

Serra fumbled the next kickoff and the Bulldogs again recovered. At the time, it was the fourth turnover by the Eagles. On second-and-goal, Faieta again came up big, eluding two would-be tacklers in the backfield and finding Jeremy Price in the back of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Add seven more points to the Bulldogs' total.

"It was a snowball effect," said senior Jordan Kinder. "There was no stopping us."
