Washington County Jail may have just received a 100 percent compliance rating from state inspectors, but the mother of an inmate complained Wednesday to the prison board about his treatment.

Linda Smith of Charleroi, mother of Matthew Smith, 30, said she was removed from her son's list of visitors without her knowledge or consent.

The mother said she was at first told by jail personnel, "This is not a country club," but then learned she was taken off the visitors' list because she had been victimized by her son's crime.

She said her son used her vehicle without her permission during a cocaine-fueled binge. Next month, he is expected to finish serving a 23- to 46-month sentence for aggravated assault.

Smith also complained about her son losing clothing, books and personal items. A book on yoga was denied him because it depicted a woman exercising in leotards, photos which were determined to be too revealing.

She said the yoga poses were modest when compared with "almost naked girls" that inmates are permitted to watch on television.

Smith said her son was placed in a special housing unit for two months after a confrontation with another inmate. Her son became covered with sores and lost 10 to 15 pounds. She was unhappy with medical treatment he received.

Warden Joe Pelzer said after the prison board meeting, "We've been dealing with Linda Smith for a long time now. Her son has major issues, and we're trying to accommodate his needs."

Commission Chairman Larry Maggi, who also chairs the prison board, had asked Pelzer to look into the matters Smith raised.

"I didn't hear anything that made me feel we were doing anything wrong," Maggi said after the meeting.

Treated poorly? : 11/23/2008
First off, your permission, or consent, are not required. Second, the policies of the jail are not subjrct to your approval. Lets put it this way, if you did a better job of being a mother maybe your son would not be where he is today!

Too bad that this criminal had a "bad stay" in the county jail. Stay out of jail and you can be as comfortable as you want.

Look at his arrest record...recklessly endangering another person, robbery, fleeing police, disorderly conduct, aggravated assault...2 counts, burglary, harassment, simple assault, endangering the welfare others...2counts, receiving stolen property. The list goes on and on and she is complaining that he is losing clothes and books! Give me a break...he is a convicted felon that shouldn't even be at the county jail. He should be in the state prison!

"Mother" : 11/23/2008
I never knew the term Mother to be used in such a derogatory way. With all due respect to the warden, if this was the Father complaining, would the problem be flipped off so casually?

son treated poorly : 11/23/2008
POOR BABY !!!! Why doesn't this "MOTHER" grow up. He son is a delinquent with problems and we as a society are suppose to feel sorry for him because he can't have his yaa book ???? PLEASE send in the govermnent for a "BAILOUT". If the 30 yr. old son had any respect for himself, he would not be in jail. Time for parents to be more stern with their children while they are young so society doesn't have to hear the parents blaming the jail for beinga little harsh . GROW UP !!!!!!!!!!

Well, maybe this "person" should about this before he commited a crime. I'm tired of hearing inmates bellyaching. I agree it's not a country club. Who is footing the bill for his medical care and other things, HUM I wonder? It isn't him. IT"S THE TAXPAYERS!!! There are alot of good hardworking law abiding citizens trying to put food on the table, and healthcare for their families and yet these yahoo's get free healthcare. This mother has no shame and should be ashamed. I tell ya what though, if or when this person gets out, I'll bet he'll think twice about commiting another crime.

son in jail : 11/23/2008
Maybe, if his behavior on the outside was proper, he would not have to worry about treatment on the inside!

If this woman had done a better job raising her son, maybe he wouldn't be in jail right now. She should have asked the prison board to order the guards to tuck him in and read him a bedtime story at night. If this 30 year old man has to have his Mommy fight his battles, then he probably is having a rough time in jail. Too bad, because is a criminal who should be locked up. WC Jail isn't exactly San Quentin. So sorry he couldn't have his yoga book.
