A Slovan man will spend the next three years on probation for helping his former employer set fire to a house near her home in September 2005.

Paul Butchko, 46, of 23 Hammond Ave., was sentenced Friday by Washington County Judge Janet Moschetta Bell. He pleaded guilty to arson in July.

While Butchko will spend 3 years on probation, he must serve the first six months on electronic home monitoring. He must also undergo mental health evaluation and treatment and pay restitution of $1 as agreed by the victim.

Another term of the sentence is that Butchko cooperate with the district attorney's office in the prosecution of Valerie Testa of 13 Easton St., Slovan, who allegedly asked him to burn the dilapidated house at 10 Easton St. owned by Candia Hess. The two-story house was across the street from Testa's residence.

According to court records, Butchko and Testa poured kerosene under the house's porch, then used a light to start the fire that severely damaged the house.

Testa is accused of paying Butchko $50 to help her set the fire. She remains free on $2,000 bond.
