Langeloth congregation regroups after fire damages 1926 church This article has been read 120 times. by Karen Mansfield Staff writer The congregation of Langeloth Community United Presbyterian Church in Smith Township is regrouping after fire heavily damaged the 81-year-old building Friday night.
The Rev. Gregg Graybill said the church will hold its regular 9:30 a.m. service at Langeloth Community Center. He is thankful the fire was not worse. "We're obviously sorry the fire has occurred, but we see God's grace in it," said Graybill, noting the church organist, who lives across the street spotted the fire and quickly notified the fire department. In all, six departments responded to the blaze, which broke out shortly after 6 p.m.
"We're grateful to the fire departments to responding so quickly, for working so hard and for their care," said Graybill. He was moved by firefighters who covered the altar and pews with tarps. The fire likely was started by an electrical problem. A state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, but an initial review by Slovan Fire Department indicated an electrical problem in the attic, a Burgettstown firefighter said. Graybill said the congregation will hold its regular 9:30 a.m. service at Langeloth Community Center. "I had hoped to set the church on fire spiritually," Graybill managed to joke. He said members of the congregation are shocked and saddened at the damage caused by the fire. The church sustained significant smoke and water damage. The fire rekindled early Saturday morning, and firefighters tore down the rest of the ceiling and covered windows. Firefighters responding to the property on Langeloth Road found heavy smoke coming out of the structure, a firefighter said.
The church was founded in 1926. "It could have been worse," said Graybill. "We're trusting that God will bring good out of this." |
