W&J women remain unbeaten after win

Washington & Jefferson jumped out to a 15-2 lead and never looked back as the Presidents stayed unbeaten with an 88-56 win over Penn State-Altoona in the final game of the Holiday Inn Meadow Lands Classic Saturday at Henry Memorial Center.

Emily Hays and Kennan Killeen each scored 18 points to pace the Presidents (2-0). The duo was a combined 18-of-20 from the foul line, with Killeen making all 10 of her foul shots.

Maggie Gibson also added 10 points and seven rebounds for W&J, which shot 55 percent from the field, including 50 percent from three-point range, and 84 percent from the foul line.

Erin McGowan led Penn State-Altoona (0-2) with 12 points while Courtney Carroll added 11.

California 74, Salem International 56: Laura Gilbert scored 23 points to lead a second-half rally that sent California University past Salem International, 74-56, in the opening round of the Best Western Tournament.



Lindsay Johnson added 12 points and Kayla Smith 10 as the Vulcans (1-0) rallied from a 38-37 halftime deficit. Keris Timol had 10 rebounds and Johnson and Crystal Andrews had seven apiece.

Jeannie Saunders scored 17 points but had 10 turnovers for Salem. Krystal Fontenot and Tapre Young each had 14 points.

Frostburg State 61, Waynesburg 41: Brittney James scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to power Frostburg State to a 61-41 victory over Waynesburg.

Amanda LaPorta added 13 points and Shanell Williams pulled down nine rebounds for Frostburg State (2-0).

Michaelene Jones and Amanda Mitchell each chipped in with eight points for the Yellow Jackets (1-1). Jones had six rebounds and Elisha Jones had five.

Men's results

Juniata 74, Washington & Jefferson 48: Kyle Opitz paced three Juniata players with 18 points in a 74-48 victory over Washington & Jefferson in the Doc Greene Men's Basketball Tournament Championship.

The Eagles (2-0) held W&J to 30 percent shooting. Brian Cannon added 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds, and Eric Mueseler tossed in 11 points in 18 minutes.

Freshman guard Brian Felker and junior forward Wahab Owolabi each finished with 12 points. Sophomore guard Albert Varacallo added 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Waynesburg 86, Cabrini 78: Josh Parisi and Dan Happe combined for 48 points and 13 rebounds to pace Waynesburg to an 86-78 victory over Cabrini.

Parisi had 25 points and 11 rebounds and Happe had 23 points, including seven baskets from three-point range. Tim Drakeley scored 17 points and hit seven from the free throw line for the Yellow Jackets (1-0).

Glenn Washington sank eight three-pointers and scored 26 points to lead Cabrini (0-1). Randy Reid added 17 points and blocked four shots.
