W&J rolls, wraps up PAC title

EDGEWOOD, Ky. - Washington & Jefferson College left little doubt Saturday that it wouldn't leave Kentucky without the Presidents' Athletic Conference football championship.

The Presidents scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters and forced four Thomas More turnovers as W&J routed the Saints 42-0 to clinch the conference championship.

Curt Jones rushed for a game-high 153 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Presidents (5-0, 9-0). Quarterback Bobby Swallow passed for 204 yards and two touchdowns as the Presidents rolled up 374 yards of offense.

Thomas More (2-4, 4-5) didn't get near the W&J end zone until early in the fourth quarter. When they did, the Saints fumbled on the W&J 2-yard line and the ball was recovered by the Presidents' Julian Muganda.

W&J wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Presidents cornerback Ryan Mullen intercepted Joey Zerhusen at the Thomas More 29 on the first play of the game. Three plays later, Kevin Mathews scored from two yards out the make it 7-0 just 51 seconds into the game.



Swallow hooked up with Ryan Church for a 14-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter to make it 14-0 W&J. Swallow had his second touchdown pass of the half three minutes later when he connected with Craig Besong on a 14-yard touchdown reception to make it 21-0.

Jones gave W&J a comfortable 28-0 lead going into the break with his first touchdown run, a three-yard score with 1:16 remaining in the second quarter.

Jones added a four-run scoring run late in the third quarter before linebacker John Fahey capped the scoring with a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown to make it 42-0.

W&J wide receiver Tom McCafferty had a game-high 10 receptions for 113 yards.

Cordario Collier rushed for 92 yards on 19 carries to lead Thomas More. The Presidents held Thomas More to 69 yards passing.

Washington & Jefferson will conclude its regular season Saturday at Cameron Stadium when the Presidents will host Bethany on Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
