Washington Hospital retiree enjoyed fishing, camping

Thomas L. Poland, 59, of Washington, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, in Washington Hospital.

He was born January 28, 1948, in Washington, a son of the late Floyd and Olive Phillips Poland.

He was a 1976 graduate of Trinity High School and worked at Washington Hospital until his retirement in 1998.

Mr. Poland was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Washington, where he was working toward becoming a Mormon.

He enjoyed fishing, camping and watching the Steelers.

He and his wife, Cindy, of Washington, were married May 18, 1984.

Also surviving are five children, Jenny Poland and fiancé Ray Bell Jr., Amy and husband Walter McCartney, both of Washington, Timmy and wife Jennifer Reedy of Prosperity, Jennifer Reedy and Thomesina and husband Michael Sonson, both of Washington; a sister, Ines Moore, and brothers Don and Rich Poland, all of Washington; and 13 grandchildren, Leeann, Bud, Jamie, Kayla, Austin, Brandon, Cody, T.J., Nathan, Walter, Sonny, Laura and Sara.

Deceased are a daughter, Jodi Poland, and a brother, Bob Poland.

Friends will be received from noon to 2 p.m., the hour of services, Friday, December 28, in Nichol Funeral Home, 1873 East Maiden Street, Washington, with Bishop Matt North officiating. Interment will follow in Independence Township Cemetery.

MICHAEL TIM HERILLA

Consol Energy Mine retiree enjoyed hunting, fishing

Michael Tim Herilla, 60, of Coal Center, died Wednesday, December 26, 2007, in Donnell House, Washington, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 8, 1947, in Monongahela, a son of Michael (Mitch) and Ann Wuycheck Herilla of Bentleyville.

Mr. Herilla retired from Consol Energy Mine 60. He was a First Lieutenant in the National Guard, 103rd Armor, Johnstown, and a member of Rocky Elks Foundation, National Wild Turkey Federation, United Mine Workers Association Local 1197 and Bentleyville American Legion Post 165.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Surviving are his wife, Carrie Kurowski Herilla; two daughters, Tara Herilla of Ellsworth and Timi and Harry Close of North Strabane; two sisters, Susan and Greg Smiley and Nadine Connor, both of Bentleyville; and his pride and joy, grandson Noah Close.

Deceased is a brother, John Eric (Ricky) Herilla.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Leonard M. Pavlic Funeral Homes Inc., 405 Main Street, Bentleyville. Services are incomplete and will be announced in a later edition.

LESTER MARLIN ANDERSON

Washington resident was long-distance truck driver

Lester Marlin Anderson, 58, of Washington, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, in his home. He had been in declining health.

He was born September 7, 1949, in Nineveh, a son of Robert and Dorothy Lyons Anderson.

Mr. Anderson worked as a long-distance truck driver and formerly worked as a groom at various horse racing venues in the United States.

On February 10, 1968, he married Vivian Dodd, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Anderson of Cokeburg and Joshua Anderson of Washington; a daughter, Hollie (Marc) Zavallo of Eighty Four; three brothers, Robert Anderson of El Paso, Texas, Donald Anderson of Wooster, Ohio, and Carl Anderson of Hendersonville; three sisters, Ruth Ealy of Washington, Hazel Brewer of Gainesville, Texas, and Ella Mae Haddock of Leesburg, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Marc, Macen and Mitchell Zavallo, and Jeffrey, Jacob, Cody, Mackenzie, Bailey and Adam Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a brother, David Anderson; a sister, Darlene Burt; and a grandchild, Jakota Ray Anderson.

GUY LEO BANNISTER JR.

1949 graduate of

Washington High School

Guy Leo Bannister Jr., 75, of Seville, Ohio, and Fort Myers, Fla., died Monday, December 17, 2007.

He was born February 10, 1932, in Washington, a son of Guy Sr. and Virginia Bannister.

He was a 1949 Washington High School graduate.

Mr. Bannister was a member of Wadsworth First Christian Church and was an associate member of Fort Myers Christian Church, having served as a deacon.

He coached youth baseball and football and was a dedicated fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ohio State Buckeyes.

After retirement, he spent many hours enjoying golf with family and friends, as well as spending time with his pride and joy, his beloved grandchildren.

Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Jean Fleming Bannister; four children; and seven grandchildren.

Deceased are brothers Jack and Gene.

A memorial service was conducted Friday, December 21, in Fort Myers Christian Church.

Friends will be received at noon Saturday, December 29, in First Christian Church, Wadsworth, Ohio, where a memorial service will held at 1 p.m.

Dorothy S. Pleins, 94, of Eighty Four, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, in McMurray Hills Manor.

She was born September 29, 1913, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Alexander and Virgie Reidenbaugh Stemmler.

Mrs. Pleins attended Pittsburgh schools and worked in sales in Pittsburgh until her retirement in 1975.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Scenery Hill.

She was first married to Frank Griggle, who is deceased.

On May 14, 1953, she married William Pleins, who is deceased.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Nancy E. Berry Griggle of Lone Pine; two grandchildren, Robert Griggle and Daniel J. Berry; four great-grandchildren, Shannon Winslow Horaman, Bobby Griggle, Nina Berry Adams and Daniel R. Berry; and four great-grandchildren, Abby and Taylor Winslow and Kali and Noah Adams.

Deceased are a son, Frank A. Griggle; and a brother, Willard Stemmler.

John Dayak, 70, died Saturday, December 22, 2007, in Britta Care Manor, Anaheim, Calif., of Lewy body dementia.

He was born June 7, 1937, in Canonsburg, the youngest child of Charles and Anna Dayak.

On August 8, 1959, he married Rita Kesnowski, who survives. They began their family of three children.

In 1962, they moved to Orange, Calif., and Mr. Dayak worked at Kaiser Electroprecision for 23 years, retiring in 1999.

He loved being a grandfather.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three children, Denise (Terry) of Nokesville, Va., Trudy of Phoenix, Ariz., and Greg (Allyson) of Dana Point, Calif.; five grandchildren, Kailey, Emily, Nathan, Samantha and Chloe; three brothers, Mike and George of Pennsylvania and Frank of the state of California; and four sisters, Libby, Helen, Margaret and Ann of the state of California.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are brothers, Pete and Charles; and a sister, Mary (Mandus).

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 28, in Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church, 995 North West Street, Anaheim, Calif.

EVELYN R. RETZER YOUNG

Evelyn R. Retzer Young, 89, of Ross Township, died Sunday, December 23, 2007.

She was the beloved wife of the late William H. Bartram and George A. Young Jr.; loving mother of Robert Bartram, Shirley Wolff and Rainey Bittner; sister of Rowena (Ronald) Beddillion and Audrey (Earl) Stover.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

Deceased, in addition to her husbands, are a sister and two grandchildren.

In 1940, she graduated from Westminster College.

Prior to her retirement, she was a teacher in Upper St. Clair School District.

She was on the board of Fidelity Bank and Suburban General Hospital.

Visitation is private. Friends are invited to attend a service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 29, in H.P. Brandt Funeral Home Inc., 1032 Perry Highway, Ross Township (412-364-4444). Retired nurse's aide enjoyed gardening, camping

Patricia F. McCaffrey, 71, of Midway, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, in St. Clair Memorial Hospital, Pittsburgh.

She was born March 23, 1936, in Primrose, a daughter of William and Emily Schmeck Frazier.

Mrs. McCaffrey was a nurse's aide, employed by John J. Kane in Scott Township, until her retirement in 1996.

She was a member of Allegheny County Retirees and Midway SNPJ, where she had been a member of the Hook Team.

An avid reader, she enjoyed gardening and camping and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

On August 24, 1957, she married Robert John McCaffrey Sr., who died February 23, 2006.

Surviving are three daughters, Deborah Lynn (Edmund) Curigliano of Bridgeville, Patricia Jo (Scott) Gillie of Imperial and Lori Jean (Jeffrey) Zeleskey of Midway; a son, Robert John McCaffrey of Bridgeville; four sister, Jackie O'Rourke of Cecil, Lucy Hawk and Sally VanGysel, both of McDonald, and Betty "Jeanie" Reeder of Eighty Four; a brother, James Frazier of McDonald; and six grandchildren, Angela and Anthony Curigliano, Matthew Zeleskey and Meghan, Ian and Mackenzie Gillie.

Deceased are a sister, Marjorie McKindley; and a brother, William Frazier.

CATHERINE W. DEAN

Member of Houston United Presbyterian Church

Catherine W. Dean, 100, of McMurray Hills Manor, formerly of Houston, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, in McMurray Hills Manor.

She was born March 3, 1907, in Carnegie, a daughter of Louis and Emma Hack Wright.

She was a member of Houston United Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Dean made homemade candy in Houston under the name of KA-Dean's Candies for 64 years. She owned a restaurant in Houston from 1948 to 1952 and owned KA-Dean's Tea Room in Canonsburg from 1951 to 1954. She cooked for Rotary Club in Canonsburg from 1953 to 1959 and worked in the cafeteria at Pennsylvania Transformer from 1959 to 1962.

She was married to Walter Alexander Dean, who died in 1946.

Surviving are a son, Wallace Hack (Lore) Dean of Lancaster, Va.; a beloved granddaughter, Jodi Lynn (Chuck) Mills of Corneluis, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Charles A. IV, Jordan and Emily Mills; a nephew, Dawson (Irene) Wright Jr; and two nieces, Jean (James) Sickles and Agnes Wagner.

She will be greatly missed by two special friends, Adelyn and Kurt Schussler.

Deceased are two sons, Louis Arthur and Wayne Curtis Dean; a sister, Elizabeth Nicholas; and a brother, Dawson Wright.

Sarah J. Watters, 85, of Washington, died Tuesday, December 25, 2007, in Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington, following a brief illness.

She was born August 16, 1922, in Delphine, a daughter of Louis and Ada Anderson.

For seven years, Mrs. Watters worked as a packer at Hazel Atlas.

She was a member of Senior Citizens of Claysville.

A good cook, Mrs. Watters enjoyed making Sunday dinners, and enjoyed fishing.

She was Baptist.

Her first husband, Jim Pester, is deceased.

Her second husband, Kenneth Watters, died December 18, 1981.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty (Robert) Stout of Washington; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann (Ross) Sprowls of East Lake, Ohio; two brothers, Raymond W. (Betty) Anderson of Prosperity and Floyd H. (Anna) Anderson of Claysville; a sister, Mary (George) Stillwagon of Washington; three grandchildren, Audrey Ann Stout, Linda Stout and April Stout; three stepgrandchildren, Steve Sprowls, Ross Sprowls Jr. and Michael Sprowls; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two brothers; three sisters; and a half sister.

Mary Ann Spina, 95, formerly of Washington, died Monday, December 24, 2007, in Gurley, Ala.

She was born August 4, 1912, in Canonsburg, the third child of Andrew and Helen Furchak.

In 1933, she married John Spina, who is deceased. They had four children.

Mrs. Spina worked at Washington Hospital for 20 years, until her retirement in 1981.

She was an Immaculate Conception Church member. In Alabama, she attended services at Lady of the Valley/Bicentennial Chapel on Redstone Arsenal.

Surviving are her brother, Joseph Furchak of Palisades Park, N.J.; her sons, William Spin and wife Elaine of Gurley, Ala., Joseph Spin and wife Kathy of Denver, Ind., and Paul Spin; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Deceased is a daughter, Darlene Lucas.

Lillian K. Kunkle, 86, formerly of Raccoon Township, died Sunday, December 23, 2007, in the Medical Center, Beaver.

She was born March 27, 1921, in McDonald, a daughter of Charles and Elsie Klenner.

Mrs. Kunkle was a proud member of the Pennsylvania Grange for more than 50 years and also attended Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church.

Deceased are her husband, Robert E. Kunkle, who died November 17, 2000; and a sister, Valerie Raab.

Surviving are two daughters, Gretchen McBride of Canonsburg and Melissa Nagy of Center Township; five grandchildren, Laura Shiring, Amy Pedockie, Charles McBride, Sarah Nagy and Peter Nagy; five great-grandchildren, Dameion, Rayni, Wesley, Olivia and Grace; and a sister, Margaret Fuller of Finleyville.

Dorothy J. Salosky, 80, of Bobtown, died unexpectedly Tuesday, December 25, 2007, in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

She was born February 18, 1927, in Brownsville, a daughter of John and Mary Magdalene Domen Hornak.

Mrs. Salosky worked at Houze Glass in Point Marion and operated a beauty parlor out of her home for nearly 20 years.

She was a member of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church and Senior Citizens, both in Bobtown, and enjoyed playing bingo and going to flea markets.

Surviving are her five children, Patricia Salosky of McDougal, Ga., Paul W. Salosky Jr. of Waynesburg, Floyd Salosky of Dilliner, Bernard Salosky of Bobtown and Keith "Kip" Salosky of Maidsville, W.Va.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Burke of Footedale; and three brothers, Floyd and Edward Hornick, both of Bobtown, and AndrewHornick of Masontown.

Deceased are her husband, Paul W. Salosky Sr., who died November 11, 1986; and two brothers, John and Edward.

Helen Kuzy Beverina, 84, of Washington, died Sunday, December 23, 2007, in her home.

She was born March 13, 1923, in Washington, a daughter of Andrew and Anastasia Carmen Kuzy.

Mrs. Beverina graduated from Trinity High School in 1941.

She was a homemaker and member of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church.

On October 17, 1948, she married Carl J. Beverina, who died June 13, 1993.

Surviving are two daughters, Denise Beverina-Moore of McDonald and Yvonne (Jim) Weaver of McMurray; and three grandchildren, Andrew Moore, Caitlin Moore and Scott Weaver.

Deceased are a sister, Mary Balog; three brothers, John, Nicholas and Frank Kuzy; and a son-in-law, Timothy Moore.
