Peters Twp. pounds previously unbeaten New Castle

The twin towers of Peters Township proved to be too much for New Castle to handle.

Emily Correal and Lauren Hammell, who both stand over six feet tall, combined for 59 points to lead the Indians to a 79-60 upset victory over New Castle, the Observer-Reporter's No. 2-ranked Class AAAA team, in the Ambridge Tournament.

Both Peters Township forwards notched career-highs, with Correal scoring 35 points, hitting 17 of 19 free throws, and Hammell picking up 24 points.

The Indians led 24-11 after the first quarter, and Correal netted 22 points in the first half to hand the Red Hurricanes their first loss.

Tasia Tise led New Castle (7-1) with 19 points. Abby Allen scored 18 points and Shelby Rodgers added 12.

Ringgold 65, Liberty, Md., 38: Alina Selby registered a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, leading Ringgold to a 65-38 victory over Liberty, Md., in the Cenetennial (Md.) Holiday Classic.

Selby made eight of nine field goals, scoring 10 points in the second half. Emily Schartner scored 14 points with four assists and four steals for the Rams (7-2).

No player scored in double figures for Liberty (3-4).

Canon-McMillan 53, Uniontown 44: Natasha Williams sank 11 of 14 free throws, including five of six down the stretch, to help Canon-McMillan defeat Uniontown, 53-44, in the Hopewell Tournament.

Williams finished with a game-high 22 points, including three three-pointers. She was the only player to score in double figures for the Big Macs (4-6).

Lauren Davis led the Raiders (6-4) with 17 points.

Mapletown 46, Frazier 19: Heather Shook scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had five steals to lead Mapletown over Frazier, 46-19, in the Bentworth Tournament.

Erika Chory had 13 points and eight rebounds and Kaitlyn Novak added 12 points for the Maples (6-3).

McGufffey 72, South Allegheny 29: McGuffey led 47-15 at halftime en route to a 72-29 victory over South Allegheny in the McGuffey Tournament.

Elisa Schober scored 15 points and Kylie Czulewicz added 13 for the Highlanders (5-5), who had 13 players score.

The Commodores (0-11) did not have a double-digit scorer.

Center 53, Burgettstown 24: Alyssa Scott drained four three-pointers on her way to 15 points to lead Center over Burgettstown, 53-24, in the C.J. Betters Holiday Tournament.

Caterina Graziano had 12 points for Center (6-4). Emily Wilson led the Blue Devils (2-10) with 14 points.

Jeannette 66, Carmichaels 42: Kayla Cook had 18 points to lead Jeannette over Carmichaels, 66-42, in the Beth-Center Christmas Tournament.

Kirstie Cortazzo had 12 points for the Jayhawks (5-4). Three players scored in double digits for the Mikes (4-6), led by Lynne Christopher's 14 points. Molly Stuvek had 11 points and Jordan Duke scored 10.

Brownsville 82, Jefferson-Morgan 45: Five players scored at least 14 points for Brownsville as the Falcons beat Jefferson-Morgan, 82-45, in the Mason-Dixon Challenge at West Greene.

Rebecca Bruschi and Emily Lucosh each had 19 points, Cassie Onesko and Stacey Knox scored 15 apiece, and Angie Pelehac added 14 for Brownsville (9-3), which made 39 field goals.

Ashley Phillips led Jeff-Morgan (1-9) with 18 points and Shelby Yourchik scored 12.

Hundred, W.Va. 66, West Greene 40: Mary Devaul drained six three-pointers and scored 31 points for Hundred, W.Va. in a 66-40 win over West Greene, which is hosting the Mason-Dixon Challenge.

Jordyn Gorby added 15 points for Hundred (5-2), which was 15-for-34 from the free-throw line.

Angela Devenney scored 14 points and Chelsea Wilson had 12 for the Pioneers (1-9), who made 10 of 27 free throws.

Chartiers-Houston 42, Clay-Battelle 41: Chartiers-Houston jumped out to an eight-point lead at the half and held on for a 42-41 win over Clay-Battelle, W.Va. in the Mason-Dixon Challenge at West Greene.

Katie Rosemeier scored a game-high 20 points and Chelsea Morton added 10 for the Bucs (3-8), who have won three straight.

Chelsi Wade had 13 points and Samantha Copeland 11 for Clay-Battelle, which was 2-for-11 from the free-throw line.

Latrobe 69, Charleroi 28: Latrobe led Charleroi 21-8 after the first quarter and cruised to a 69-28 win in the Monessen Girls Holiday Tournament.

Emily Fenton scored 16 points, Lindsy Muchnock had 15 and Courtney Zitt added 14 for the Wildcats (6-4).

Maribeth Mudrick led Charleroi (4-5) with six points.

Monessen 51, Belle Vernon 41: Monessen trailed by one point after three quarters but outscored Belle Vernon 15-4 over the final eight minutes for a 51-41 win in the Monessen Girls Holiday Tournament.

Kelly Mornak scored 16 points for the Greyhounds (11-0) and Christina Chukwuedo made 11 of 14 free throws on her way to 15 points. Monessen missed 14 free throws but still outscored the Leopards 20-1 at the line.

Lisa Manderino had 16 points and Kayla Watson added 10 for Belle Vernon (2-7).

Bentworth 64, California 26: Brittany Speed had a triple-double and Amanda Kennedy had a double-double to lead Bentworth past California, 64-26, in the Bentworth Christmas Tournament.

Speed finished with 17 points, 11 assists, 10 steals and six rebounds for the Bearcats (6-5). Kennedy scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win.

Morgan Moluski scored seven points to pace California (2-7).

Quaker Valley 51, Fort Cherry 42: Christa Rogers made 11 of Quaker Valley's 15 free throws and she netted a game-high 21 points as the Quakers defeated Fort Cherry, 51-42, in the McGuffey Tournament.

Courtney Foltz scored 16 points for the Rangers (5-6), who trailed 41-22 after three quarters. Marissa Miles added 12 points for Fort Cherry and Sidney Walter finished with 10.

Katie Clancy netted 15 points for Quaker Valley (4-5).

Beth-Center 43, Avella 42 (OT): Tyffani Balog sunk two free throws with nine seconds left in overtime to lift Beth-Center past Avella, 43-42, at the Beth-Center Christmas Tournament.

Megan Sowers led the Bulldogs (7-4), who play Jeannette at 8 p.m. in the championship, with a game-high 20 points.

Avella (4-5) did not score during the first quarter. Joelle Yamber led the Eagles with 11 points.

Boys basketball

Fort Cherry 77, Jefferson-Morgan 53: Junior Zach Bellhy poured in a career-high 34 points to lead Fort Cherry over Jefferson-Morgan, 77-53, in the Mason-Dixon Classic at West Greene.

Bellhy also had six steals and five assists. Mike Kropf scored 19 points with 11 rebounds for the Rangers (4-6).

Mike Mox scored 20 points and Justin Falcon had 14 for the Rockets (4-7).

Waynesburg 51, Cameron, W.Va. 35: Waynesburg jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and went on to defeat Cameron, W.Va., 51-35, in the Mason-Dixon Classic.

Rusty Phillips scored 13 points and Sean Fancher had 11, hitting three three-pointers, to lead the Raiders (2-8).

Cameron did not have a double-digit scorer.

Latrobe 54, Washington 35: Latrobe handed Washington its first loss since the second game of the season, 54-35, in the Upper St. Clair Holiday Tournament.

Jeff Yunetz hit four three-pointers to score a game-high 26 points. He was the only player for either team to score in double figures. The Wildcats improved to 5-5.

Tom Kelly led the Prexies (10-2) with nine points. The loss snapped a nine-game Washington winning streak.

Pine-Richland 49, Peters Township 40: Pine-Richland out-scored Peters Township, 33-20 in the second half, to earn a 49-40 victory in the Montour Christmas Tournament.

Brett Matson led the Rams (8-3) with 15 points. Tommy Johnson scored 14 and Kevin Wissinger added 10 points.

Steve Radke led the Indians (9-3) with 15 points and Pat Russo scored 10.

Brashear 82, Avella 39: Brashear led 22-5 after one quarter and defeated Avella, 82-39, in the Carlynton Tournament.

John Wetzel led Brashear (7-3) with 15 points. Travis Lewis had 13 points and Elijah Peterson and Henri Chatman each added 10.

C.J. Gottardi led the Eagles (4-6) with 15 points.

Belle Vernon 75, Bentworth 66: Jon Kennedy scored 25 points, but Belle Vernon outlasted Bentworth and claimed a 75-66 victory in the Charleroi Tournament.

Bo Lustig scored 21 points, Jacob Dudzinski had 20 and Josh Pohlat added 19 points for the Leopards (7-3).

Brandon Bular scored 15 points, Joe Kennedy had 12 and Jason Jansante added 10 points for the Bearcats (7-2).

Carmichaels 66, Geibel 41: Joby Lapkowicz scored 15 points as Carmichaels topped Geibel, 66-41, in the opening round of the Carmichaels Lions Christmas Tournament.

Jeremy Ganocy and Billy Hyatt scored 10 points each for the Mikes (5-2).

Brendan Constantino led Geibel (1-7) with 12 points.

Chartiers-Houston 66, Clay-Battelle 55: Jerad Cypher scored 17 points to lead four Chartiers-Houston players in double figures during a 68-55 win over Clay-Battle, W.Va. in the Mason-Dixon Challenge at West Greene.

Josh Alderson scored 13 points, while Mark Jones and John Popeck each added 10 for the Bucs (6-6). Cypher also had six steals.

Tyler Barnette netted 16 points and Cameron Cummings had 15 for Clay-Battelle.

Burgettstown 74, Carlynton 69: Derek Goetz had a double-double as Burgettstown raced to a 17-point halftime lead then held on for a 74-69 win over Carlynton at the Cougars' tournament.

Goetz scored a career-high 24 points and pulled in 13 rebounds for the Blue Devils (8-2), who were outscored 30-17 in the third quarter. Brenden Bongiorni scored 19 points and Sean Tunno added 15 for Burgettstown, which plays Brashear today in the 7:30 p.m. championship.

Greg Koritsky scored a game-high 27 points and Drew Kurry had 11 for Carlynton (3-8).

Charleroi 54, Southmoreland 40: Charleroi built an 11-point halftime lead on its way to a 54-40 win over Southmoreland at the Charleroi Holiday Tournament.

Taylor Andrisko scored 17 points and Eli Obade netted 13 for the Cougars (6-6), who play Belle Vernon in the championship today, 9 p.m.

Andrew Sillore scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Scotties (2-9).

Monessen 68, Fox Chapel 61: Terrance Stepoli's three-pointer with 1:23 remaining broke a 61-61 tie and ignited a seven-point game-ending run as Monessen defeated Fox Chapel in the Upper St. Clair tournament.

Winners of eight straight, Monessen (8-3) got 23 points from Tim Tyree and 16 from Stepoli. Kevin Parker added 15 points for the Greyhounds, who play Upper St. Clair tonight at 8 p.m.

Harrison Smith led Fox Chapel (5-6) with a game-high 25 points.

West Greene 50, Hundred (W.Va.) 35: Aaron Gifford scored 19 points and blocked four shots as West Greene picked up its first win, a 50-35 victory over Hundred (W.Va.) in the Mason-Dixon Classic at West Greene.

Josh Cook added 10 points for the Pioneers (1-6), who play Clay-Battelle (W.Va.) today at 5 p.m. Matt Church scored 15 points for Hundred (3-2).

North Hardin (Ky.) 68, Ringgold 36: Ringgold's stay at the Marion County (Ky.) Classic has not gone well through two games as the Rams lost to North Hardin 68-36.

Maurica Gose and Roosevelt Emerson each tallied 15 points for North Hardin (10-1).

R.J. Brownlee led the Rams (4-7) with 11 points. Ringgold continues play today against Paul Dunbar High School.
