Inside game carries Cal past Lock Haven

An 11-0 run midway through the second half sparked the California University men's basketball team to a 70-58 PSAC West Division win over Lock Haven Saturday at Hamer Hall.

Kenny Johnson, who came off the bench to score 11 points, sparked the run for California (8-0, 18-4) with a three-point play. Ali Mbaye was 9-for-13 shooting for a game-high 23 points, most of those in the paint.

Ron Banks added 15 points for California, which got outrebounded by Lock Haven and only had three offensive rebounds in the game.

Lock Haven (2-7, 2-21) got 19 points from Tyrone Palmer and 11 from Kelvin McLean.

St. Vincent 77, Wash & Jeff 70: Albert Varacallo's tip-in with 0.2 seconds remaining tied the score at 69-69 for Washington & Jefferson, but St. Vincent outscored the hosts 8-1 in overtime for a 77-70 victory.

The Presidents (10-13) missed all 10 field-goal attempts in overtime.

Joey Butler led the Bearcats (20-3) with a game-high 25 points.

Four players scored in double figures for W&J, led by Wahab Owolabi's 17 points. Brian Felker had 16 points, Josip Lucic-Jozak 14 points and 12 rebounds and Nick Zereck 11 points.

Grove City 84, Waynesburg 62: Grove City held visiting Waynesburg to only one field goal over the final 10:39 and outscored the Yellow Jackets 30-6 during that time to earn an 84-62 PAC victory.

Four players scored in double figures for Grove City (8-3, 15-8), led by Kris Verderber, who had 19.

Tim Drakeley led Waynesburg (2-9, 8-15) with 20 points. Josh Parisi scored 17 and Dan Happe had 12.

Women's results

California 92, Lock Haven 44: Brooque Williams had a huge game for California. Williams had 25 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and seven steals to lead the Vulcans past Lock Haven, 92-44, in a PSAC West game at Hamer Hall.

Emily Briggs, a Chartiers-Houston graduate who recently joined the Vulcans, started and made all four of her shots in an 11-point performance. Kayla Smith led California (5-3, 18-5) with 26 points. Crystal Andrews scored 14.

Lauren Kelshaw led Lock Haven (2-7, 7-16) with 15 points and Michelle Mitchell added 11.

Wash & Jeff 71, Saint Vincent 53: Maggie Gibson had game-highs of 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Washington & Jefferson to a 71-53 win over St. Vincent.

Jen Rogers had 10 points off the bench for W&J (17-6), which outrebounded St. Vincent 46-32.

Maria Baroffio led St. Vincent (8-15) with 15 points.

Grove City 56, Waynesburg 43: The struggles continue for Waynesburg, which lost to host Grove City, 56-43, in PAC play.

The Yellow Jackets (0-12, 1-22) played the Wolverines evenly during the second half, but managed only 14 first-half points.

Michaelene Jones had 11 points for Waynesburg, which has lost 22 games in a row.
