Burt joins Duquesne

Washington native and Trinity High School graduate Dan Burt was the first assisant coach named to the Duquesne University women's basketball team staff Tuesday under new coach Suzie McConnell-Serio.

Burt owns nine years of Division I coaching experience and he spent the past three years as an assistant at Bucknell.

"Dan fills the number-one need we had and that's in the area of recruiting," McConnell-Serio said. "He has a great deal of experience in addition to plenty of local ties."

Burt also served as an assistant for three years at West Virginia (1998-2001) and UNC-Wilmington (2001-04).

The 36-year-old Burt graduated from West Liberty State College in 1993 with a degree in physical education. He played basketball for the Hilltoppers.

High school baseball

In the completion of a suspended game, Jefferson-Morgan handed California its second loss of the season, 11-1, in Section 1-A.

Justin Falcon doubled and had a two-run homer, Jarrod Moskola doubled and tripled and Ryan Edwards knocked in three runs for the Rockets (7-3, 10-5). Mike Mox went the distance, striking out eight.

The Trojans (6-2, 12-2) committed six errors.

• Despite getting just one hit, Bentworth took over first place in Section 1-A with a 5-4 victory over Carmichaels.

The Bearcats (8-2, 11-2) scored the winning runs in the bottom of the seventh, erasing a 5-4 deficit without the benefit of a hit.

Ryan Anderson, who picked up the win, drew a one-out walk off losing pitcher Chuck Gasti, who then induced a flyout to centerfield from the next batter for the second out of the inning. But Gasti then walked Taylor Young and George Lucy to load the bases.

Gasti got the next batter to hit a comebacker to him, but tried to beat the runner to first and Young raced home from second behind Anderson to score the winning run when the runner at first was ruled safe.

Ethan Virgilli hit a pair of doubles for the Mikes (5-3, 6-5), while Joby Lapkowicz also doubled in the loss.

• Chad Smith and J.J. Paskert combined on a three-hitter as Washington defeated visiting Burgettstown, 3-1, in a Section 2-AA game at Colt Field.

Smith picked up the win for Wash High (5-2, 5-5) after pitching five scoreless innings. Alex Evans added two hits and an RBI. Paskert also had two hits.

Brendan Bongiorni pitched well but took the loss for the Blue Devils (3-4, 5-6).

• Josh Snatchko's three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the sixth lifted Fort Cherry to an 8-5 win over Charleroi in Section 2-AA.

Rickey Kelly threw a complete game and hit a two-run home run and Snatchko doubled for the Rangers (2-5, 3-7). Brent Liggett and Zach Crowley also doubled and Nick Russell had three hits in the win.

Nathan Helster had a three-run home run and Chad Pappasergi doubled for the Cougars (2-5, 3-7).

• Trinity scored five runs with two outs in the third inning en route to a 9-3 victory at Ringgold in Section 4-AAA.

Nick Weaver had the big hit in the third, a two-run double. Sean McKnight, Matt Shade and Derek Hughes also doubled for the Hillers (7-3, 8-4). Hughes finished with four RBI.

Andrew Sweat had three hits and earned the victory.

Jim Koontz doubled and Jon Kendra tripled for the Rams (1-6, 1-7).

• Cornell's Justin Bibbo hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and the Raiders held on for a 5-4 victory over visiting Avella in Section 2-A.

Avella (5-5, 6-8) had plenty of baserunners as Cornell committed six errors, but the Eagles left 12 runners on base. Cornell scored two runs in the first and three more in the fourth against Avella pitcher Chris Khouri, who gave up only five hits and one walk.

Cornell (5-4, 5-8) moved a half-game ahead of Avella for third place in the section. The teams meet again Saturday at Avella.

High school softball

Washington won the Section 2-AA championship in impressive fashion, pounding out 16 hits Tuesday in a 10-0 five-inning win over visiting Brownsville.

Winning pitcher Amanda Baughman, whose double was the only extra-base hit for the Prexies, fired a two-hitter with six strikeouts. Amber Pivak had a big day at the plate for Washington, going 4-for-4. Baughman had three hits.

Washington is 12-0 in the section and 16-1 overall. Brownsville is 3-8, 4-9.

• Beth-Center moved a half-game ahead of Burgettstown for second place in Section 2-AA with a 5-1 victory over the Blue Devils.

Ashley Nieford doubled with three RBI and Megan Sowers also had a double for the Bulldogs (7-4, 9-5). Geri Whitman struck out 17 batters.

Jess Falcon tripled for Burgettstown (7-5, 9-6).

• West Greene moved closer to clinching a Class A playoff spot after a 12-2, five-inning victory over Mapletown.

Sarah Burns went 4-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI and Katie Horr knocked in three runs for the Pioneers (9-3, 10-4), who are in second place and three games ahead of Frazier.

The Maples fell to 5-7, 7-7.

• Heather Herbert hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Jefferson-Morgan cruised to an 11-1 victory over winless Geibel in Section 2-A.

Winning pitcher Emily Cottle allowed only three hits over the six-inning game and struck out eight. Cottle helped her own cause with a double. Lindsay Olson and Ashley Naylor also doubled for J-M (5-5, 6-6), which holds third place in the section.

• Michelle Greenawalt and undefeated Chartiers-Houston won a pitchers' duel with Fort Cherry's Kaitlyn Hoop. Chartiers-Houston used Brittany Jones' one-out, two-run single in the top of the sixth to pull the 2-0 victory in Section 1-A.

Greenawalt fired a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts. She walked only one batter. Hoop also was impressive, giving up just five singles and three walks. She struck out 12.

Chartiers-Houston is 11-0 in section and 14-0 overall. Fort Cherry is in third place in the section at 6-6 and 8-7 overall.

• Belle Vernon scored four times in the third and three more in the fifth to defeat West Mifflin, 9-5, in Section 4-AAA.

Apryl Patterson doubled, tripled and knocked in two runs for the Leopards (9-3, 11-5). Alana Lacey doubled and Dena Mornak had two RBI in the win.

• Alyssa Zrimsek fired a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts, as Bentworth topped California, 12-1, in a Section 1-A game.

Melissa Rankin had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four runs for Bentworth (11-2, 13-2). Abby Sutton and Megan Sames added triples, while Brittany Kurowski chipped in a double for the winners.

Amanda McKula had the lone hit for California (5-6, 5-7).

• Winning pitcher Courtney Newland and Alyssa Workman each had two-run singles in the top of the seventh inning to lift Carmichaels to a 6-5 Section 2-A win over Frazier.

The Mikes (10-1, 11-1) trailed 2-1 heading into the seventh before exploding for five runs.

Newland, who struck out eight batters, also doubled.

Marissa Pasquale doubled for Frazier (5-7, 8-7).

• Kristen Zelenka pitched a one-hit shutout and Trinity put back-to-back doubles together in the third inning as the Hillers won at Bethel Park, 2-0, in a Section 4-AAAA game.

Zelenka struck out seven and walked none for first-place Trinity (9-1, 13-1).

The Hillers got a run in the third when Ashley Morran, who had doubled, scored on Shannon Falleroni's double. Ashley Amistade went 3-for-3 with a run scored.

Bethel Park fell to 3-5 in section and 3-7 overall.

• Emily Bosworth made her first career pitching start and the freshman allowed only three hits but Waynesburg lost its fifth straight, 2-0 to visiting Elizabeth Forward in a Section 4-AAA game.

Bosworth struck out seven and did not walk a better but she did allow a solo home run to Hillary Holets in the seventh inning.

Lindsey Smith pitched a three-hit shutout for the first-place Warriors (11-1, 12-1). She struck out seven.

• The pitching of Allison Kleinhans and some timely hitting helped McGuffey deal a big blow to the postseason plans of Ringgold as the Highlanders scored a 2-1 win in Section 4-AAA.

Kleinhans tossed a two-hitter and she did not walk a batter. Meanwhile, catcher Kayla Winfield tripled twice for McGuffey (3-8, 3-8) and scored twice on singles by Sam Coffield.

Amber Crompton struck out eight for the Rams (4-6, 4-7).

Girls lacrosse

Paige McMenamin and Jenn Doran combined to score 14 of Peters Township's 18 goals as the Indians beat Bethel Park, 18-1.

McMenamin had eight goals and Doran scored six. Kelly McGrail added two goals and Alyssa Izzi and Sam Schwartz had one each. Goalie Alex Walnoha made eight saves for PT (14-1).

Pony baseball

Brad Martin doubled twice and was the winning pitcher as Chunko Law defeated Chambers Insurance, 11-8, in a Washington Pony game.

Tyler Roy also doubled for Chunko (2-1). Julian Anderson tripled for Chambers.

• James Macek and Andrew Lis each went 3-for-4 as the Chartiers-Houston Bears defeated Burgettstown No. 2, 13-6, in a Greater Route 50 Pony game.

Austin Kerr was the winning pitcher for the Bears (3-0).

College softball

On the final day of the regular season, California University slipped to third place in the PSAC West after dropping a rain-shortened decision at Edinboro, 3-1, in six innings.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled. The Vulcans made three trips to Edinboro in five days to try to play the doubleheader.

The Fighting Scots (12-7, 19-18) scored one run in the second and two in the third.

California (11-8, 14-15) opens the PSAC tournament against Bloomsburg tomorrow (10 a.m.) at Kutztown.

College golf

The Washington & Jefferson men's golf team won its third straight tournament when it claimed the Carnegie Mellon Edward Jones Shootout at Longue Vue Country Club on Tuesday.

The Presidents posted a score of 307 and were led by co-medalist Michael Reddy, who shot a 73.

Carnegia Mellon and Mercyhurst tied for second with a 309. LaRoche (337) and Grove City (344) placed fourth and fifth.

• California University's women's team remained in fourth place after the second day of competition at the 2007 East Regional at Katke Golf Course in Michigan.

The Vulcans shot a two-under par 34 on the back nine. The second round was halted after nine holes on Tuesday. The final 27 holes are to be played today.

Simome DeSouza is Cal's top individual. She moved from 14th place to sixth. She has a 112 score after 27 holes.
