84 Alpacas
If you've never met an alpaca, you're not alone. Alpacas are camelids that are native to South America and have been in this country for only eleven years. They are, as the name implies, related to camels as well as the better known llama. Their temperament however, is much more pleasant than a llama's and alpacas are prized for their soft, warm fiber which is made into the most wonderful sweaters, blankets, mittens and so on. Alpacas are fast becoming the suppliers of luxury fabric throughout the U.S. and the rest of the world. At 84 Alpacas at Linwood Farm in Eighty Four, PA, partners Craig Eslep and Bill O'Donnell have been raising alpacas since the summer of 2006.
Alpaca fiber is classified as a rare, specialty material. It comes in 22 natural shades that can be blended into an infinite variety of colors. Lacking lanolin and having a smooth cellular structure, it is warmer than wool, hypo-allergenic, and has none of the itch, making it supremely comfortable.

Nestled on seventeen acres, the farm has a Craftsman-style home which is a registered landmark of Washington County, a separate guesthouse (for those wishing to experience farm-living for just one day), a springhouse, historic Teamster barn, and a carriage house which has been converted and renovated into an alpaca shop. The shop offers all manner of things made from alpaca - sweaters, blankets, children's wear and toys, coats, scarves, backpacks and purses, as well as Peruvian handicrafts by native artisans; pottery, jewelry, musical instruments, and original works of art.
The shop is open Thursday through Sunday 10 to 5, but the door is open anytime and for anyone who wants to meet a new, fuzzy friend. Alpacas have proven to be a wonderful endeavor for Craig and Bill, providing a learning experience as well as an opportunity to meet many terrific new people who have shown interest in these endearing animals. We delight in introducing anyone to our alpacas who wants to learn about them. Some visitors have become clients and some friends; some only one-time guests, but all are welcome anytime.
