We were selected to be a part of a national research study through UPMC. UPMC is one of the ten clinical centers in North America. This study may improve the treatment protocols for trauma and cardiac arrest patients. Our Paramedics and EMTs are very excited to be a part of this very controlled and interesting study.
With the assistance of the regional EMS office, we now have CPAP machines in eleven ambulances. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) units improve oxygenation and ventilation of patients in severe respiratory distress. It reduces the need for pre-hospital and in-hospital intubation. Also, we purchased two new ambulances in 2007.
The challenges of providing ambulance service continues. The fee schedules for Medicare and most insurance are to low and Medicaid is below costs. We understand our contracted carriers; Highmark, Health America, UPMC, Unison and most others will be raising their deductibles and co-pays making more of a financial burden for our patients. While necessary business insurance, the cost of employee hospitalization benefits and responding to 2600 false alarms continues to rise. However, the rewards of caring for our patients and saving lives far outweigh the challenges.
We look forward to 2008 serving our patients, Post Gazette Amphitheater and other venues and facilities. We are privileged to serve Washington County.
