Avella SD voters reject tax referendum

Observer-Reporter

Voters in the four municipalities that make up Avella Area School District voted down the referendum to direct half of the 1 percent realty transfer tax to the school.

The referendum failed by a vote of 459 to 357. The municipalities, West Middletown and Cross Creek, Independence and Hopewell townships, argued that the loss of the half-percentage would adversely affect their budgets.

However, most other school districts in the county already split the realty transfer tax with their municipalities. The Avella school district would have received about $25,000 by splitting the tax.
