Field fire season is here

Spring tends to be a busy season for fire departments, especially those in rural and suburban areas. Trash fires fed by the wind can get out of control, burn up acres of fields and, if not caught in time, can even threaten houses.

Before you decide to burn outdoors, it's a good idea to check the laws in your municipality. Keep fires contained to burn barrels away from the house, and don't let them burn without supervision.

It's also wise to keep a hose handy as well as to carry a cell phone to call 911 if you need help.

The problem can be worsened by people who toss away lit cigarettes. If you smoke, use the ashtrays in your vehicle. Anyone who has seen the destructive results of a field fire knows how much damage one cigarette can cause.

This is clearly a preventable problem. By following a few safety rules and using common sense, you can save your local fire company a lot of aggravation and danger.
