Providing high-quality water isn't something we strive to achieve, it's something that we deliver every day. As a part of the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)'s Partnership for Clean Water, our water quality surpasses standards for drinking water.
In fact, our 28 water treatment plants have received the Five-Year Directors Award from the U.S. DEP for exemplary operations. Protecting the public health is our top priority.
Fire Protection
Just as important to your health is our ability to provide high-quality service in times of emergency. Many people do not realize the first reason many community water systems were built was for the reliable delivery of water for fire protection.
How easy would it have been to build that home without the promise of adequate fire protection? And what about insuring it - if the corner hydrant didn't work, what kind of risk would your home be for an insurance provider?
Our water system has earned the highest rating possible from the Insurance Services Office for the quality of our fire protection system. For Pennsylvania American Water, the promise of reliability extends past the maintenance and replacement of our mains and facilities.
It also means making sure infrastructure like our hydrants meet the high standards we set for our operations. Pennsylvania American Water's hydrant inspection teams inspect and test our approximately 27,000 hydrants throughout the commonwealth year-round to make they sure work when you need them the most.
Economic Development
Pennsylvania American Water can deliver the service and capital needed to provide infrastructure required to support economic development opportunities across the commonwealth. From the heavy industry of the Mon Valley to Fike's Dairy in Uniontown, the company works every day with local, state and federal elected officials to create partnerships that provide clean reliable water and the infrastructure needed for economic development opportunities.
Reinvesting in Your Future
Pennsylvania American Water has invested more than $490 million since 2003 to meet the water service needs of our customers across the commonwealth. The company continually makes system improvements as the EPA revises it standards for water quality and safety and security of the water system.
Pennsylvania American Water is making continued reinvestment in our water treatment facilities. The company is pro-active in line replacement service. Continued maintenance equates to safer drinking water for our customers and less chance for interruption of service.
The Power of a Penny
The next time you consider buying bottled water, think about the value of your tap water and the benefits it provides to you and your community. If these benefits don't resonate with you, just think about the effects of bottled water on your wallet.
For the price of a single, 20-ounce bottle of water, you could fill up the same container with Pennsylvania American Water once a day for approximately 13 years. Remember only tap water provides you with public health protection, fire protection, support of economic development projects for less than a penny a gallon.
