Police said a man who was arrested over the weekend for retail theft later confessed to being Washington County’s so-called “rooftop burglar.”

South Strabane police Chief Donald Zofchak said 42-year-old Frank J. Bruno confessed to the slew of burglaries that have baffled investigators for the past two weeks. Police plan to charge Bruno, whose address is unknown, in three burglaries since May 22 at the A Plus Sunoco convenience store on Murtland Avenue. On two occasions, the burglar entered the store through a rooftop ventilation system.

Police in Washington and Chartiers Township suspect Bruno is responsible for similar burglaries in their municipalities. The Mega Express Exxon store on Ridge Avenue in the city was burglarized three times, while Gabby Food Mart on West Pike Street in Chartiers was struck twice. Investigators from both departments said they plan to interview Bruno this week before filing charges.

South Strabane police originally charged Bruno with retail theft on Sunday after they said he stole two DVD players last month from Sam’s Club at Trinity Point. He was arraigned by District Judge Larry Hopkins on the retail theft charge and taken remains in Washington County Jail on $25,000 bond.
