Nick Weaver had four hits and four RBI while Andrew Armstrong pitched a six-hitter as Trinity trounced Elizabeth Forward, 14-0, in five innings in a Section 4-AAA game.
Weaver had a three-run single in the fourth. The Hillers (1-0, 2-1) scored four times in the second and third innings and five more in the fourth. Matt Shade had two hits and two RBI for Trinity.
Armstrong struck out five and walked two in the win while Mike Pohodich walked seven in the loss for EF. Tyler Meier doubled for the Warriors.

The Highlanders (0-2, 0-4) had only three hits in the contest. Steel Valley improved to 2-0, 3-1. Luke Baker was the losing pitcher.
• Chris Khouri struck out 12 and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Avella upended Clairton 7-6 in Section 2-A.
After Clairton rallied from a 6-1 deficit, Khouri singled to start the seventh and stole second. Jesse Noble then singled home Khouri with one out for the win.
Mason Adams went 2-for-4 with five RBI for Avella (1-1, 2-3). Clairton dropped to 0-2, 0-2.
Washington scored four runs in seventh inning to pull away from Beth-Center, 8-3, in Section 2-AA.
Alex Evans had three hits and Chad Smith pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Prexies (2-0, 2-3).
E.J. McCarty doubled for the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-4).
• Fort Cherry scored 16 runs in the last three innings against Charleroi to earn an 18-6 victory in Section 2-AA.
The Rangers (1-1, 2-3) had home runs by Ricky Kelly and Nick Russell. Russell’s was a grand slam. Josh Smitchko doubled for Fort Cherry. Zach Crowley pitched a complete game.
Brad Price doubled for the Cougars (0-2, 1-4).
• Cornell scored five runs in the first inning in a 9-5 win over Monessen in Section 2-A.
Mike Pica and Kyle Riley doubled for the Greyhounds (1-1, 1-5).
• Jefferson-Morgan trailed by six runs heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before rallying for a thrilling 14-13 victory over visiting Geibel in a Section 1-A game.
The Rockets (1-1, 4-2) were down 13-10 heading into the seventh. Jarrod Moskola hit a two-run single and, after a Mike Mox RBI single, Moskola scored the winning run when a throw to home plate hit off the catcher’s foot.
Moskola went 4-for-5 with three runs, four RBI and a stolen base. Justin Falcon went 2-for-4 with three runs, a double, a home run and three RBI.
Geibel hit six doubled but dropped to 0-2 in section play.
H.S. softball
Trinity needed only three innings to score 21 runs in a 21-0, three-inning victory over Upper St. Clair in Section 4-AAAA.
Kristen Zelenka threw a no-hitter for Trinity (3-0, 6-0). She struck out four and walked one in the win.
Kilee Bonazza was 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Hillers while Katelynn Falleroni had two doubles and two RBI for Trinity while Courtney Brown and Chelsea Lang also doubled in the win.
Upper St. Clair (0-3, 0-6) made five errors in the loss. Chelsea Ciolli was the losing pitcher.
• Lindsay Relihan tossed a one-hitter for Fort Cherry in a 11-1, Section 1-AA win over Monessen.
Harley Davidson and Relihan each had two RBI for the Rangers (3-1, 5-2). Relihan struck out seven and walked one.
• In a battle of Section 2-AA favorites, Washington bested Burgettstown, 4-1.
Jordan Jackson had two triples and Larissa Bistarkey doubled twice, and each player had two RBI. Amanda Baughman struck out 10 batters.
Heather Pulver doubled for the Blue Devils (3-1, 5-2). The Prexies are 2-0, 6-0.
• Peters Township bounced back from a loss to Trinity by defeating Canon-McMillan, 9-1, in Section 4-AAAA.
Shaylee Ianno struck out 11 Big Macs and PT freshmen Kelsey Cunningham and Lindsey Hoover combined for six RBI, including a grand slam by Cunningham. Hoover had two hits and two RBI.
The Indians (2-1, 4-2) led 9-0 after three innings. Canon-Mac is 0-2, 2-4.
• Waynesburg scored four times in the fourth inning en route to a 9-5 victory over Dunkirk (N.Y.) in South Carolina.
Emily Bosworth hit a two-run double in the fourth for the Raiders (4-0). Courtney Orndoff and Alyson Johnson also doubled and Molly Henderson scored three runs.
• Beth-Center exploded for 14 runs in the final three innings to defeat South Fayette, 14-10, in Section 2-AA.
Tyffini Balog doubled and winning pitcher Rachel Zane tripled and had three RBI for the Bulldogs (1-1, 2-2).
The Lions (2-2, 3-3) hit five triples. Shannon Rohbeck had two and Lakayla Desmet, Kristen Carr and Olivia Klimek had one each.
• California defeated Avella, 7-6, earning its first Section 1-A win.
Victoria Bennett went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI for the Trojans (1-2, 3-4). Maria Wohar had two doubles and three RBI and Chrissy Pankratz and Amanda McKula each doubled for California.
The Eagles, who scored three runs in the first inning, fell to 0-4, 0-4.
• Emily Cottle struck out nine batters and Jefferson-Morgan collected six extra-base hits in a 12-0 shutout of Mapletown in a Section 2-A game.
Cottle, who drove in four runs, Ashley Naylor and Ashley Phillips each doubled for the Rockets (3-1, 4-2). Erin Barbetta had three hits, including two triples, and Heather Herbert also tripled for J-M.
Mapletown fell to 1-3 in the section and 2-3 overall.
College baseball
Landon Sinclair pitched a complete game for Waynesburg as the Jackets defeated Grove City, 7-4, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
Sinclair (4-1) struck out nine in the win. He allowed four runs on 11 hits.
Brendon Steele, a Canon-McMillan graduate, tripled, scored two runs and drove in two runs for Waynesburg (4-3, 9-9). Chad Litten also doubled in a two-hit day while Ryan Group, a McGuffey graduate, also had two hits.
Ray Mertz had three hits including a triple and home run for Grove City (2-2, 10-4).
College softball
Hannah Schulz had six hits, scored five runs and had seven RBI to help Washington & Jefferson sweep Chatham College, 19-1, 16-1. Both games lasted five innings.
Valerie Schultz, a McGuffey graduate, hit a two-run homer for W&J in game one while Melissa Metcalf, a Carmichaels graduate, and Kelsey Donahue hit back-to-back home runs.
Tanesha Minney, a Chartiers-Houston graduate, had three hits and four RBI while Stacey Bugle and Kelly Morrow also had three hits and four RBI for the Presidents (9-6).
Pitt-Duquesne at Falconi
The baseball version of Pittsburgh’s City Game is coming to Washington. Pitt and Duquesne will meet Wednesday, April 11 at Falconi Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. There is no admission charge.
College golf
The Washington & Jefferson College men’s golf team earned its first national ranking after the Presidents were ranked No. 25 in the most recent Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches poll.
The Presidents opened the spring season by tying for eighth place at the Jekyll Island (Ga.) Invitational.
Last year, they made their first appearance in the NCAA Division III championships and placed 19th out of 23 teams.
St. Vincent naming field for Noll
St. Vincent College will name its new football field after former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Chuck Noll.
The Steelers have held their training camp at the school for the past 40 years and will use the field, which will be called Chuck Noll Field.
Noll, in a statement released by the school Wednesday, said he was honored.
“I have vivid memories of the summer training camps where we brought each team together, despite the heat and humidity and work that we had to do. We worked hard but we also had a lot of fun and it all led to some great seasons,” Noll said.
Noll, 75, was the Steelers’ coach from 1969-91, and he remains the only coach to win four Super Bowls.
Steelers to play 5 preseason games
The Pittsburgh Steelers will play five preseason games, two of which will be nationally televised.
The Steelers will start their preseason schedule on Aug. 5 vs. New Orleans in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The game will be telecast on the NFL Network.
The team’s other nationally televised game will be Aug. 26 vs. Philadelphia at Heinz Field. The 8 p.m. game will be broadcast on NBC.
The Steelers other preseason home game will be Aug. 11 vs. the Green Bay Packers. Pittsburgh also will play at Washington on Aug. 18 and the Carolina Panthers on the road on Aug. 30.
In the NHL
The Atlanta Thrashers should be glad they won’t have to face Alex Ovechkin in the playoffs – especially on home ice.
Ovechkin scored two second-period goals, giving him eight in four games in Atlanta this season, and the Washington Capitals beat the Thrashers 3-2 Wednesday night.
Washington’s Brent Johnson gave up a goal to Ilya Kovalchuk about one minute into the game, but allowed only one more, to Andy Sutton late in the game.
