Tanker leaks 2,500 gallons of fuel at Bentleyville truck stop

This article has been read 357 times.

About 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into Pigeon Creek in Bentleyville Tuesday night.

The spill occurred at Pilot Truck Stop about 10 p.m. when the shut-off valve on a diesel fuel tank ruptured, allowing about 2,500 gallons to escape, Bentleyville firefighters said.

Washington County Haz Mat crews and the state Department of Environmental Protection also responded to the spill and worked into Wednesday to contain the fuel and prevent it from leaking into drains.

Pilot Truck Stop called in private crews to clean up the spill.

Several tractor-trailers that were parked at the truck stop during the spill were not permitted to leave until clean-up crews removed diesel fuel from their tires. This prevented the trucks from driving on roadways, causing them to become slick.

The DEP said drinking water was not affected.
