A Claysville man was killed in an accident involving two pickup trucks on Route 136 in Somerset Township Thursday.

State police in Washington said Harold Stanley Varner, 51, of Brandenburg Lane, was traveling west on Route 136 when he crossed into the eastbound lane at the Church Road intersection and collided with a truck driven by Scott Kolessar, 42, of Bentleyville, who was traveling east.

Varner was pronounced dead at the scene by Washington County Deputy Coroner Tim Kegel, less than an hour after the 6:08 p.m. accident.

Kolessar, who was wearing a seat belt, refused medical treatment.

Police said Varner was not wearing a seat belt.

Assisting at the scene were Valley Inn and Ellsworth fire departments and Bentworth Ambulance Service.

Police shut down the road for about 90 minutes while they investigated the accident.
