Former Lt. Gov. Ernest Kline dies

HARRISBURG (AP) – Former Lt. Gov. Ernest Kline is dead.

Family members say Kline, who grew up in the Monessen area, died Wednesday at Hershey Medical Center of heart failure.

He was 79.

Kline served eight years as lieutenant governor in the 1970s under Gov. Milton Shapp.

He was just 35 when he was elected to represent Beaver and Lawrence counties in the state Senate. He served six years there, including a stint as the minority leader, before he became lieutenant governor.

Kline was a radio news reporter when he broke into politics, winning a seat on the Beaver Falls council.

After he left the lieutenant governor’s office, Kline moved to Lebanon County.
