A faculty of hens? After the West Virginia Faculty Senate voted overwhelmingly Monday to call for his resignation, university president Mike Garrison said he intended to stay on the job. To which Sherman Riemenschneider, one of the resolution's sponsors, was quoted as replying, "If he thinks the faculty is going to lay down, he's in for a surprise." Assuming the quotation is accurate, we are thankful the good professor teaches mathematics and not English. Still, he should know the difference between "lay" and "lie." Unless the faculty is made up of hens, "lie" is the correct word in this context.
