A Smith Township man was arrested Saturday night by township police after allegedly shooting his friend in the stomach with a handgun.

Anthony L. Ferguson, 42, of 785 Joffre-Bulger Road, Bulger, is accused of shooting Lawrence Stevens in the chest. Ferguson told police it was an accident and that he did not know the gun was loaded, said police Chief Bernie LaRue.

Ferguson was arraigned via video before District Judge curtis Thompson on charges of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. He was placed in Washington County Jail on $35,000 bond.
